On June 3, 2025, Sumter County deputies responded to a concerning situation involving a suspicious vehicle obstructing traffic near the intersection of Alva Drive and Reona Avenue. When they arrived at the scene, they found the driver, 35-year-old Justin Michael Ray Worley, unconscious behind the wheel, creating an immediate and tense situation. The vehicle was still engaged in drive with Worley’s foot pressing on the brake pedal, and a machete was lying beside him in the car. Deputies worked quickly to rouse Worley, and once he regained consciousness, he voluntarily admitted to having illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia in his possession, both on his person and inside the vehicle.

The discovery marked the beginning of a series of events that would lead to Worley’s arrest and subsequent charges, including drug possession and operating an uninsured vehicle. Upon further investigation, deputies found heroin and methamphetamine in the vehicle, adding drug trafficking to the charges against him. Worley was immediately taken into custody without incident and transported to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. He is currently awaiting a bond hearing.

The incident began when Sumter County dispatch received a report about a suspicious vehicle blocking the roadway, prompting deputies to respond. Upon their arrival, they found the vehicle, a late-model sedan, partially blocking traffic. Worley was found slumped over in the driver’s seat, with his foot on the brake pedal. The situation quickly raised concerns, as it was unclear whether Worley had simply fallen asleep or if there were other factors at play. The presence of the machete beside him further escalated concerns about potential danger.

When deputies managed to awaken Worley, he was reportedly disoriented but cooperative. He voluntarily confessed to having drugs on him and inside the vehicle, an admission that led to further investigation and the subsequent discovery of heroin and methamphetamine. The drugs were found along with drug paraphernalia, including syringes, pipes, and other items commonly associated with illicit drug use. The deputies’ prompt actions helped contain the situation without escalation, but the discovery of drugs marked a significant development in the investigation.

In addition to the drug charges, Worley was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle, which added another layer to the case. The lack of insurance raised questions about Worley’s ability to legally drive the vehicle, further complicating the situation. It is unclear whether Worley had been using the vehicle in a lawful capacity or whether the drugs in his possession were for personal use or intended for distribution.

As a result of his actions, Worley now faces multiple charges. The possession of heroin and methamphetamine are both serious offenses, and the fact that he was found with illegal drugs while driving an uninsured vehicle only adds to the gravity of the situation. Given the circumstances, Worley could be facing significant legal consequences once his case moves forward in court.

The presence of the machete in the vehicle also raises questions about Worley’s intentions and the safety risks associated with the situation. While machetes are legal to possess in many areas, their presence in a vehicle could indicate potential violence or the possibility of further criminal activity. The machete’s proximity to Worley and the fact that he was unresponsive behind the wheel have led investigators to consider all possible angles in determining the intent behind the actions that led to the arrest.

Worley’s arrest has left Sumter County residents shocked and concerned, particularly given the unusual circumstances surrounding the incident. While it is not uncommon for deputies to respond to situations involving impaired or dangerous drivers, the combination of illegal drugs, an obstructed roadway, and a potentially dangerous weapon has drawn significant attention from the local community. Many residents have expressed concern about the prevalence of drug use in the area and the potential dangers posed by individuals driving under the influence or operating vehicles without proper insurance.

The arrest of Worley serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combatting drug-related crime and ensuring the safety of the community. It also highlights the need for continued vigilance in addressing issues such as impaired driving and the illegal drug trade. As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, it is likely that more details will emerge about Worley’s background, motivations, and any prior involvement in criminal activities.

As for Worley, he currently remains in custody at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing. It is unclear whether he will be granted bail or if he will remain incarcerated until his trial. Legal experts suggest that the serious nature of the charges against him, particularly the possession of heroin and methamphetamine, could lead to significant penalties if he is convicted.

The case has sparked conversations about the prevalence of drug use in the area and the potential dangers posed by individuals engaging in illegal activities while behind the wheel. It has also prompted discussions about the legal consequences of driving without insurance and the importance of adhering to traffic laws to prevent accidents and protect public safety.

In the coming days, it is expected that more details will emerge about Worley’s arrest, his legal proceedings, and the ongoing investigation. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has assured the public that they will continue to work diligently to address the issues surrounding this case and ensure that justice is served.

As the legal process moves forward, the community remains focused on the impact of the arrest and the broader implications of the case for public safety. The discovery of drugs, the presence of a machete, and the operation of an uninsured vehicle have all contributed to the complexity of the situation, and the case will likely continue to draw attention as it develops.

In the meantime, residents of Sumter County are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware of the risks posed by impaired driving and the potential consequences of engaging in criminal activity.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring that justice is served and that those responsible for breaking the law are held accountable for their actions. As the case unfolds, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of an arrest that has raised important questions about safety, legality, and the ongoing battle against drug-related crime in Sumter County.
