LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A harrowing domestic dispute in a quiet Lafayette neighborhood ended in tragedy on the evening of May 1, 2025, when 47-year-old Kenneth Smith was fatally shot by police responding to a 911 call. The incident unfolded on the 2800 block of Ravenswood Court and has since sent shockwaves through the community. In a bid for transparency, the Lafayette Police Department has released a heavily redacted video compilation featuring body camera footage and the original 911 audio from the distress call that led officers to the home.

    A Desperate Plea for Help

The events began just after 6:30 p.m., when a woman placed a frantic 911 call, telling dispatchers she was attempting to leave her husband. The caller, whose identity is being withheld for safety and privacy reasons, expressed fear for her life and revealed that the domestic situation had escalated to the point of potential violence.

According to police statements, the woman told dispatchers that Kenneth Smith, her estranged husband, was armed and emotionally unstable. She stated that she had packed her belongings and was preparing to leave the residence when Smith allegedly became confrontational and threatening. Officers were dispatched immediately and arrived on the scene minutes later.

    Confrontation and Tragedy

Upon arrival, responding officers attempted to de-escalate the situation outside the residence. According to the official report and the edited bodycam footage, Smith emerged from the home visibly agitated and, at one point, reportedly wielded a firearm. Officers issued repeated verbal commands instructing Smith to drop the weapon and surrender.

When he failed to comply and allegedly pointed the weapon toward the officers, law enforcement responded with lethal force. Multiple shots were fired. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts from emergency medical personnel who had been stationed nearby.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

    Transparency Through Footage

In an effort to be transparent with the public, Lafayette authorities released an edited video compilation on May 6. The video includes critical moments from the 911 call and body camera footage recorded during the encounter. However, portions of the video have been redacted to shield the identity of the woman involved and to preserve the dignity of the deceased.

Lafayette Police Chief Daniel Gardner stated during a press briefing, “This is a heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted. We understand the community wants answers, and while the investigation remains ongoing, we believe releasing this footage is a necessary step toward transparency.”

Gardner also emphasized that a full internal review is being conducted, and the incident is under independent investigation by the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office.

Community Response and Domestic Violence Concerns

The shooting has sparked an emotional reaction across Lafayette. While some residents have voiced support for the officers’ actions under dangerous and volatile circumstances, others have called for a broader conversation on the intersection of domestic violence and mental health — and how such crises are handled by law enforcement.

“This woman did the right thing by calling for help,” said Carol Jennings, director of the local women’s shelter. “But this tragic outcome illustrates the extreme danger that many people face when trying to leave abusive relationships. We need to do more to protect and support victims before violence escalates to this level.”

Local organizations have renewed calls for increased funding for domestic violence intervention programs and better mental health crisis training for police officers.

    Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps

As is standard procedure, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Their names have not yet been released.

The Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to issue a comprehensive report once all evidence, including forensic analysis, witness statements, and internal review findings, has been evaluated.

A Community in Mourning — and Reflection

While the investigation continues, the Lafayette community finds itself grappling with both grief and difficult questions about how domestic disputes can so quickly turn fatal. A memorial has sprung up near the site of the incident on Ravenswood Court, where neighbors have left flowers, candles, and messages of support for those affected.

One nearby resident who witnessed part of the police response remarked, “It’s just heartbreaking. This was a family, a home, and now it’s a crime scene. We have to do better at getting help to people before things go this far.”

As Lafayette reflects on the events of May 1, there is a renewed urgency to confront domestic violence and to strengthen the systems meant to protect those at risk. For now, the community waits for the findings of the investigation — and hopes for healing.
