Moncks Corner, South Carolina – A 53-year-old Moncks Corner woman, Anne Lachell Sellers, has been arrested and charged with Unlawful Conduct Toward a Minor after allegedly placing her 12-year-old granddaughter in serious danger during a jet ski outing that went terribly wrong. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and well-being of children during recreational activities and the responsibility adults have when supervising minors.

According to Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis, the alarming incident took place around 12:30 p.m. when Sellers and her granddaughter decided to take separate jet skis out on the water for a fun outing. However, what started as a seemingly ordinary day on the water quickly escalated into a dangerous and reckless situation that could have ended tragically. According to reports, one of the jet skis began malfunctioning, leaving both Sellers and her granddaughter stranded in the water. While Sellers was able to remain with her jet ski, she allegedly made the dangerous decision to send her granddaughter swimming back to the boat landing to seek help instead of following safer protocols.

Authorities were quick to respond when Sellers made a 911 call, reporting that her granddaughter was in distress. The young girl had been sent into dangerous conditions with no clear means of rescue or supervision. Sellers’ actions, according to investigators, were not only reckless but criminally negligent. The child was left alone to swim back to safety, exposing her to numerous risks, including the possibility of drowning, strong currents, and exposure to water hazards in the area.

In response to the emergency, an extensive water rescue operation was launched, involving several agencies. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Dive Team, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Naval Weapons Station Fire Department, and the Pimlico Fire Department all joined forces to locate the missing child and bring her to safety. First responders from these agencies worked swiftly, facing the challenges of navigating the marshy, difficult terrain, and ensuring that the young girl would be safely recovered.

After hours of searching, the 12-year-old girl was finally located in a marshy area approximately 600 yards from the boat ramp where she had been left behind. She was found suffering from cuts and abrasions to her arms and legs, likely the result of swimming through the rough waters to find help. The young girl was rescued by emergency personnel and immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation. While the child’s injuries were not life-threatening, the traumatic experience left her in need of medical attention and care.

The investigation into the incident revealed that Sellers had initially provided misleading information about the circumstances that led up to her granddaughter’s distress. Further inquiries into the situation showed that Sellers failed to act responsibly and made a series of poor decisions that jeopardized her granddaughter’s safety. Rather than following proper safety procedures, such as seeking help or staying with the child to ensure her well-being, Sellers allegedly sent the child into an unsafe situation on her own.

Sheriff Duane Lewis of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded strongly to the incident, condemning Sellers’ actions and emphasizing the serious consequences of reckless decision-making that puts children in harm’s way. “Careless decisions that endanger the lives of juveniles will not be tolerated, and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law,” Sheriff Lewis stated. “Not only was this child’s life put at risk, but so were the lives of our first responders who entered dangerous conditions to conduct the rescue. These actions are unacceptable and criminally negligent.”

The South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS) was promptly notified and has since become involved in the case. SCDSS’s involvement underscores the seriousness of the situation, as their role in child protection is crucial in addressing cases of neglect and endangerment. The agency will likely conduct a thorough review of the family’s circumstances and determine whether additional action is necessary to ensure the child’s safety moving forward.

Anne Lachell Sellers is currently being held at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center, where she is awaiting a bond hearing. The legal process is now underway, and the severity of the charges against her underscores the potential long-term consequences of her actions. Unlawful Conduct Toward a Minor is a serious crime, and if convicted, Sellers could face significant penalties, including jail time and fines.

This incident has raised alarms within the Moncks Corner community, as well as throughout the state. It has sparked an important conversation about the responsibilities of adults when supervising minors, especially during recreational activities that involve potential hazards. Water-related incidents, particularly those involving children, are unfortunately all too common, and many local residents have expressed concern over the lack of adequate safety protocols in place during such activities.

The incident has also prompted discussions about the importance of safety education, particularly for parents, guardians, and caregivers who may be unaware of the risks involved in seemingly harmless activities like jet skiing. Experts stress that it is crucial for adults to ensure that children are properly equipped, trained, and supervised when engaging in water activities. In this case, Sellers’ failure to adhere to basic safety guidelines ultimately put her granddaughter in grave danger.

For many in the community, this event is a painful reminder of the critical importance of protecting children and being vigilant when it comes to their safety. The emotional toll of this incident is evident, as local residents rally to support the child and hope that justice will be served for the reckless actions that endangered her life.

In the aftermath of the incident, community leaders have called for a renewed focus on safety awareness, particularly in recreational areas where children and families gather. Local organizations are also stepping up to provide education and resources to help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The goal is to ensure that future generations can enjoy water-related activities safely, with a focus on responsibility and care.

The young girl, now safe and recovering from her ordeal, will likely carry the emotional scars of this traumatic experience for years to come. While her physical injuries may heal, the psychological impact of being put in such a dangerous situation will require ongoing support. Community members have shown an outpouring of support for the child, hoping to provide her with the emotional resources she needs to move forward.

As the legal proceedings against Anne Lachell Sellers unfold, the Moncks Corner community will continue to mourn the traumatic incident and advocate for justice. Sellers’ actions have not only jeopardized her granddaughter’s safety but have also created a ripple effect of concern, fear, and pain that will be felt throughout the area. The hope is that this tragedy will serve as a cautionary tale, inspiring better supervision, greater awareness, and stronger protective measures for children engaged in recreational activities. The community stands united in its efforts to ensure that such a horrific event never happens again.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further actions may be taken depending on the results of the continued inquiries. The focus now remains on ensuring the safety of the child and addressing the legal ramifications for those responsible.
