NORTH SACRAMENTO, Calif. — June 17, 2025 — A violent and chilling attack left a man seriously injured after being shot in the face, beaten with baseball bats, and robbed at a North Sacramento residence. Following an extensive investigation, Sacramento County authorities have taken two suspects into custody. The incident occurred on May 24, 2025, near the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Marysville Boulevard.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded to an urgent call from a concerned neighbor who reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot and someone pleading for help near a large residential property. Deputies arrived at the scene and made contact with two adult males: Robert Treat and the victim, identified as James Collins, who sustained a severe injury to his face.

    Victim’s Account of the Attack

According to Collins, he had come to the property to inspect a tent trailer that was listed for sale. However, what started as a routine meeting quickly escalated into a brutal assault. Collins said that Samuel Mattia, the second suspect involved in the incident, shot him in the face without provocation using what Collins believed to be a firearm.

Following the shooting, Collins was repeatedly assaulted with baseball bats by Mattia and another assailant whom Collins initially could not identify. The violent attack continued as Mattia proceeded to steal Collins’s wallet and car keys. Mattia then fled the scene driving Collins’s vehicle — with Collins’s friend, Michael Sanders, still inside.

    Law Enforcement Response and Apprehension

Deputies detained Robert Treat at the scene and immediately called for medical assistance for Collins. While medical aid was being provided, deputies located the stolen vehicle nearby and attempted a vehicle stop. Mattia abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Fortunately, Michael Sanders, the individual inside the stolen vehicle during the carjacking, was unharmed throughout the ordeal.

Initially, Treat was released at the scene as deputies did not have enough evidence to link him to the crime at that time. However, Robbery Detectives continued their investigation and uncovered sufficient evidence connecting Treat to the assault.

    Follow-Up Investigation and Arrests

Robbery Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Treat and subsequently took him into custody. Working in conjunction with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office North Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) team, detectives executed a search warrant at the residence where the incident took place to collect additional evidence related to the attack.

Both Robert Treat and Samuel Mattia are currently being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail without the possibility of bail due to the serious nature of the charges.

Mattia faces multiple felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, carjacking, and other related offenses. Treat also faces felony charges related to his involvement in the violent attack and robbery.

    Upcoming Court Dates

    • Robert Treat is scheduled to appear in court on June 20, 2025.
    • Samuel Mattia is scheduled for a court appearance on July 10, 2025.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to determine if any other individuals were involved or if additional charges will be filed.

    Community Impact

This violent incident has rattled the North Sacramento community, highlighting concerns about safety and crime in the area. Neighbors and local residents have called for increased law enforcement presence and stronger preventive measures to combat violent crime.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with information related to this case or similar crimes to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.

    Victim Status

James Collins remains in medical care following the attack. Authorities have not released details on his current condition but confirm he is expected to recover from his injuries.

This harrowing assault serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking even in seemingly ordinary situations and underscores the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to bring violent offenders to justice.
