Eight of the ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans have been apprehended after more than a week on the run, authorities confirmed Monday evening. The escape, which occurred on May 16, 2025, ignited a massive manhunt, with law enforcement agencies at local, state, and federal levels working tirelessly to track down the fugitives. The first of the escapees to be captured was Lenton Vanburen, who was arrested in Baton Rouge. Vanburen, who had been incarcerated for parole violation, possession of a firearm by a felon, and illegal carrying of a weapon, now faces additional charges related to the escape. His capture marked a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to bring the remaining escapees back into custody.

The Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the arrest, noting that Vanburen’s escape had been one of the most high-profile cases in a series of jailbreaks that prompted widespread public concern. Vanburen’s capture was followed by the apprehension of Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald, who were arrested in Walker County, Texas, by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The cooperation between Louisiana State Police, local agencies, and federal authorities was hailed as a key factor in the successful apprehension of the fugitives. The Louisiana State Police commended the collaboration, saying, “This is a clear example of how effective collaboration and open communication between agencies can lead to successful outcomes.”

Although eight of the ten inmates have been captured, two remain at large. The manhunt continues, and authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant. The remaining fugitives are now the focus of law enforcement agencies, who are working tirelessly to bring them to justice. The ongoing investigation and search for the two escapees highlight the persistent threat posed by dangerous individuals on the run, further underscoring the urgency of capturing the last of the escapees.

The escape itself was a meticulously planned operation. On the morning of May 16, the inmates climbed through a hole behind a toilet in their cell, allowing them to break free from their cells and navigate their way through the Orleans Justice Center. This jailbreak went unnoticed for several hours, giving the escapees a significant head start. The gap in the system that allowed for such a breach raised questions about the facility’s security protocols and whether there had been lapses in oversight and supervision.

The escape set off a large-scale investigation and manhunt as law enforcement agencies scrambled to locate the fugitives. Within the first 24 hours of the jailbreak, three of the ten inmates were apprehended, providing a glimmer of hope for authorities. However, the remaining escapees evaded capture for several days, prompting law enforcement officials to work closely with the public, utilizing all available resources, including facial recognition technology, surveillance footage, and tips from the community.

In the aftermath of the escape, seven people were arrested on suspicion of helping the escapees. Among those arrested was a jail maintenance worker who is accused of shutting off the water supply to the toilet that facilitated the breakout. Other individuals arrested included another inmate in the jail, as well as five others who allegedly played a role in assisting the escapees in their flight from justice. The arrest of these individuals highlights the complexity of the case and the extent to which others may have been involved in enabling the escape.

As the investigation into the escape continues, authorities are focusing on the individuals who may have aided the inmates in their efforts to evade capture. Investigators are closely examining the circumstances surrounding the jail’s security protocols and working to identify any additional lapses that may have allowed the escape to occur. The Louisiana State Police and other agencies are also conducting interviews with witnesses, analyzing surveillance footage, and reviewing all available evidence to piece together the full story of how the escape unfolded.

The prison break and the subsequent manhunt have left many residents of New Orleans and surrounding areas on edge. The escapees, some of whom had been incarcerated for violent crimes, represent a significant threat to public safety. While most of the fugitives have now been captured, their escape and the prolonged search for the remaining inmates serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in the criminal justice system. The incident has raised questions about the security measures in place at correctional facilities and the effectiveness of the protocols designed to prevent such incidents.

As of now, the community in New Orleans and the surrounding areas is breathing a collective sigh of relief, with most of the escapees back in custody. However, the apprehension of the two remaining fugitives remains a priority for law enforcement. Authorities continue to urge the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity, as they work to bring the last of the escapees to justice.

The arrest of Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, and Jermaine Donald marks a significant milestone in the investigation, but the work is far from over. The final chapter of this jailbreak saga will depend on the swift capture of the remaining two escapees and the continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies at all levels. As the manhunt for the last two fugitives intensifies, the public’s assistance will remain crucial in ensuring that the escapees are brought to justice and that the community remains safe.

The escape of ten inmates from the Orleans Justice Center and the subsequent weeks-long search highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in managing high-risk offenders. While the situation in New Orleans has started to stabilize, the broader implications of the escape will likely lead to discussions about improving prison security, refining investigative processes, and ensuring that such a situation does not occur again.

As the community of New Orleans and law enforcement agencies continue their efforts, there is hope that the remaining escapees will soon be captured, and that the justice system can begin the process of holding those responsible for the escape accountable. Until then, residents remain alert and engaged, knowing that the pursuit of justice will continue until the final chapter is written in this unfolding story.
