LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Three EF-1 tornadoes have been confirmed in Kentucky from the Sunday night storms, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.
The first was confirmed in southern Jefferson county in Fairdale, and a second was confirmed in Bullitt County. A third was confirmed by the NWS in Spencer County a few miles from Mount Eden.
The NWS said an EF-1 with 105 mile-per-hour winds touched down four miles south of Shepherdsville, just west of KY 61. A social media post from the survey team showed what appeared to be a barn that had been destroyed.
Earlier on Monday, the NWS confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Fairdale. It said winds of at least 100 miles per hour hit the area in south Louisville. Damage was reported along Mitchell Hill Road near Chieftain Drive with many trees and powerlines down.
“I think the center of the storm passed right over this area here,” said Mike Kochasic with NWS Louisville.
Images shared from the area along Mitchell Hill Road show roof damage and a car with a large tree on top of it.
The woman who lived in the house that was severely damaged said her family was home when the tornado hit, but no one was hurt.
Trevor Armes also lives on Mitchell Hill Road. He said he was in his garage the time the storm hit.
Another neighbor’s shed ended up tangled in his fence, causing some damage to a corner of his home and carport.
“I just keep thinking it could’ve been a whole lot worse,” Armes said. “We got pretty lucky.”
Cathy New lives about half a mile away. She was still without power Monday morning, due to a power line down in her front yard.
“All of a sudden it was total darkness and I’m like holy moly,” New said.
Monday afternoon, the NWS confirmed a third EF-1 tornado in Spencer County, with winds estimated at 90 miles per hour about 2.5 miles west-southwest of Mt. Eden.
Neighbors that spoke with WDRB Monday afternoon said it could have been worse, but they are now nervous for expected storms later this week.
The NWS said it would survey damage in southern Jefferson County and in Meade County on Monday. Surveys are also possible in Hardin, Nelson, Bullitt and Breckinridge counties. It said additional surveys may be needed, as more reports of damage come in.
