Ed Buckner, a beloved figure in Arkansas broadcasting and longtime chief meteorologist at THV11 in Little Rock, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 59 years old.
Born in Houston, Texas, Buckner’s passion for weather began early. He graduated from St. Pius X High School and attended Stephen F. Austin State University before earning a degree in meteorology from Mississippi State University. In 1996, he joined THV11, where he would spend nearly 25 years as chief meteorologist, becoming a trusted source for Arkansans during severe weather events.
Buckner’s commitment to innovation was evident when, in 1997, he became the first meteorologist in Arkansas to use live radar on air to track a tornado. This advancement was credited with saving lives during that and future severe weather events.
Beyond his professional achievements, Buckner was known for his mentorship and kindness. KATV Meteorologist James Bryant recalled, “Ed was so kind. He gave me my first start in TV — back in 2004. THV had a summer Kidcaster campaign, and I was selected to do weather one evening that summer. It was an incredible experience that shaped me at just 10 years old, and it put me on a path to a TV career in this market 15 years later.”
In addition to his meteorology career, Buckner was a musician who released a children’s weather-themed album. He often performed these songs during school visits, combining education and entertainment to inspire young minds.
Buckner was also deeply involved in charitable work, supporting organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Special Olympics, United Way, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He advocated for Tourette Syndrome awareness, sharing his own experience with the disorder to promote understanding and acceptance.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Buckner; his children, Brooke Buckner, Morgan Buckner, Grant Lewis, and Kristan Hendricks; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ashton Eakin.
Colleagues and viewers alike remember Buckner as a trusted voice, a mentor, and a kind-hearted friend. KATV Chief Meteorologist Barry Brandt said, “Ed was such a sharp, polite gentleman and so talented in so many ways. He left us too soon.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The community mourns the loss of a man whose dedication, warmth, and innovation left an indelible mark on Arkansas broadcasting.
