The Magnolia Family Medicine (MFM) community is reeling from the sudden and unexpected passing of Dr. Richard Gutsin, a cherished physician, mentor, and the visionary founder of MFM. Known fondly as “Dr. G” by both patients and colleagues, Dr. Gutsin’s death on June 5, 2025, has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him and relied on his compassionate care. A man whose career spanned nearly three decades, Dr. Gutsin’s legacy is marked not just by his medical expertise, but also by his deep connection with his patients and his enduring impact on the field of family medicine.

Dr. Gutsin founded Magnolia Family Medicine in March 2000, building on a five-year partnership at Azalea Coast Internal Medicine. The decision to open MFM was born from Dr. Gutsin’s belief in the importance of providing personalized, patient-centered care in a community-oriented setting. In the years that followed, Dr. G’s vision became a reality as MFM grew into a cornerstone of the community, a place where patients were more than just numbers—they were family.

Over nearly three decades of practice, Dr. Gutsin became an integral part of the lives of thousands of individuals across the region. His deep medical knowledge and unwavering commitment to his patients earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and patients alike. Yet, it was Dr. Gutsin’s warmth and genuine care for those under his charge that made him truly stand out. He wasn’t just a physician; he was a confidante, a source of comfort, and a true advocate for his patients’ well-being. His ability to listen with compassion and offer guidance with wisdom left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

“He didn’t just treat ailments; he treated people,” said one of his longtime patients. “Dr. G always made me feel like I mattered. No matter how busy he was, he took the time to listen, to explain, and to care. He made healthcare personal.”

Colleagues at MFM remember Dr. Gutsin as not only a skilled physician but also a true leader. His colleagues and staff viewed him not only as a boss but also as a mentor and friend. “He was a guiding presence for all of us,” shared a fellow doctor at MFM. “He had this incredible ability to bring out the best in everyone around him. He made you want to be a better doctor, a better person.”

Dr. Gutsin’s dedication to the medical profession was evident in his approach to patient care. He believed in forging long-term relationships with his patients, and many of those who walked through the doors of MFM did so for years, even decades. He saw the same faces regularly, watching families grow, helping them through health challenges, and celebrating their successes. His patients trusted him not just with their health, but with their lives. He was a cornerstone of the community—a steady, comforting presence for so many.

In the days following his death, tributes from patients, colleagues, and community members poured in, each recounting stories of how Dr. Gutsin had impacted their lives. A longtime MFM staff member recalled how Dr. Gutsin always went out of his way to ensure his patients were taken care of, even during times when the practice was at its busiest. “Dr. G was never too busy to help, no matter what. He always made time for his patients, whether they needed a last-minute appointment or just someone to talk to,” she shared. “His patients loved him, and his staff respected him. He was truly one of a kind.”

As MFM now faces the challenge of moving forward without its founder, Dr. Gutsin had already made arrangements for the future of the practice. He had chosen a successor in Dr. Umar Bowers, a close friend and respected colleague who shares Dr. Gutsin’s philosophy of personalized care and patient-first mentality. Dr. Bowers, who comes with extensive experience in family medicine, will take the reins at Magnolia Family Medicine in the coming months. However, the transition will be a significant one, as Dr. Gutsin’s absence leaves a huge gap in both the practice and the hearts of all who knew him.

In the meantime, Magnolia Family Medicine is working to ensure that there is no interruption in care for its patients. Appointments are being temporarily rescheduled to Dawson Med Primary Care, located at 608 Dawson Street, where Dr. Bowers and his team at Dawson Med will provide the same level of care and attention that MFM patients have come to expect. For acute medical needs, patients can visit Dawson Med Urgent Care, also located at the same address. The MFM staff has assured patients that many familiar faces from the original team will remain part of the care team during this transition period, helping to maintain continuity of care.

While the MFM team navigates the transition, they are united in their commitment to honoring Dr. Gutsin’s legacy. In a heartfelt statement, the team said, “This is an unimaginable loss, but we will carry on his mission—with grace, with heart, and with the same unwavering commitment to our patients. Dr. G’s passion for healthcare, his love for his patients, and his devotion to excellence will continue to guide us in the days and years to come.”

Dr. Gutsin’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of many, but his legacy will live on through the work that he began at Magnolia Family Medicine. The practice he built will continue to serve the community, just as he envisioned, with a focus on compassionate care and patient-centered medicine.

As the community grieves, MFM is encouraging everyone to take care of their health, stay proactive in their medical care, and cherish their loved ones. Dr. Gutsin’s memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, reminding everyone of the importance of health, family, and community.

In addition to the transition at MFM, the Gutsin family has requested that any donations in honor of Dr. Gutsin be made to local health organizations that align with his values, ensuring that his legacy of care continues to benefit those in need. Information regarding donations and upcoming memorial services will be shared through the MFM website and other local channels.

As the community comes together to remember Dr. Richard Gutsin, there is a shared sense of gratitude for his impact on so many lives. Dr. G’s dedication to his patients, his family, and his community will never be forgotten, and his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come. His passing may have left a gap, but the foundation he built will carry on, steadfast in its commitment to the values he held dear. For ongoing updates and information, patients and community members are encouraged to visit the Magnolia Family Medicine and Dawson Med websites.
