GREEN LAKE, WI — An overwhelming wave of sorrow has swept through the City of Green Lake following the heartbreaking loss of Emmet Zodrow, a bright and beloved 12-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a bicycle accident on the grounds of the Castecker Library on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Emmet was known by all who met him as a spirited and kind-hearted child, full of curiosity and joy. His infectious laughter and gentle nature had endeared him to friends, family, neighbors, and teachers alike. The young boy had a special connection with the Green Lake community, where he spent countless afternoons exploring the library’s gardens and reading corners, always eager to learn and discover new stories.

The tragic accident occurred in the early afternoon when Emmet was riding his bicycle near the entrance of the Castecker Library, a place that had become a second home to him. Preliminary reports indicate that while maneuvering around the busy library grounds, Emmet lost control of his bike, resulting in a severe crash. Despite the swift response of emergency personnel and bystanders who rushed to his aid, Emmet succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to the local hospital.

News of Emmet’s untimely passing has left the entire community in shock and mourning. The City of Green Lake, known for its tight-knit and caring residents, has come together to support the Zodrow family and honor the memory of a young boy whose life was cut far too short. Local schools, friends, and neighbors have organized vigils and memorials to celebrate Emmet’s life and to provide a space for collective grief and healing.

Emmet’s parents, overwhelmed with grief, have expressed their profound sadness and gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they have received. In a heartfelt statement, they remembered Emmet as a “bright light who brought endless joy and hope” and urged the community to cherish their loved ones and always prioritize safety.

The Castecker Library, deeply affected by the tragedy, has announced plans to establish a safety awareness program in Emmet’s honor, aiming to educate children and families about bicycle safety and accident prevention. The library staff have also created a memorial space within the library gardens where visitors can leave messages and remember Emmet’s bright spirit.

Friends and classmates remember Emmet as a passionate reader and a loyal friend who loved animals, nature, and spending time outdoors. His teachers recall his eagerness to learn and his willingness to help others, qualities that made him a role model among his peers.

The Green Lake Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, emphasizing the importance of safe biking practices and attentiveness in public spaces. Officials have urged all residents, especially children and their guardians, to take extra precautions while cycling, particularly in busy areas like the library grounds.

As the community grapples with this profound loss, the memory of Emmet Zodrow serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of sorrow. The city is rallying around his family, promising to keep his memory alive and to honor the spirit of a young boy who touched so many hearts.

Funeral and memorial service details are expected to be announced soon, with the community encouraged to participate in celebrating Emmet’s life and legacy.

In these moments of grief, the City of Green Lake stands united, finding strength in each other and honoring the cherished memory of Emmet Zodrow — a shining star whose light will never be forgotten. GoFundMe
