North Columbus Shooting – The streets of North Columbus were eerily quiet in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 4, 2025, when gunfire shattered the silence.
A routine Lyft ride turned into a nightmare as bullets ripped through the vehicle, leaving a teenage passenger fatally wounded and the driver fighting for his life.
Just before 4:00 a.m., officers with the Columbus Division of Police responded to a shooting report on Roche Place, near Sinclair Road. What they would soon uncover was a tragedy in motion—one that had left 17-year-old Ariyaun Burton critically injured and a Lyft driver wounded as well.
The call to 911 came from the driver himself. Bleeding and panicked, he managed to pull into a Sheetz gas station on East Dublin-Granville Road, desperately seeking help. Paramedics rushed both victims to Riverside Methodist Hospital, but despite their efforts, Burton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Authorities have yet to reveal details about a suspect or what led to the attack. With no arrests made and the motive unclear, detectives are working to piece together the moments leading up to the shooting.
The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, survived the attack and is being treated for his injuries. Meanwhile, Burton’s family and friends are left grappling with the sudden and devastating loss of a young life taken far too soon.
