JENKINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Residents of a Luzerne County neighborhood say they are very concerned about a strong chemical odor coming into their homes from the sewer system. The problem surfaced several months ago in Jenkins Township, just north of Wilkes-Barre. They say it has gotten progressively worse. They say they are concerned about what impact the odors could have on their health. Several residents called the I-Team for help, lead investigator Andy Mehalshick is working the story and reports live on 28/22 News.
LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Work planned on a heavily traveled bridge that connects two Luzerne County communities is expected to cause traffic delays starting on Monday. The Pittston City Police Department posted a traffic advisory on Thursday, alerting drivers about construction plans for the Specialist Dale J. Kridlo Memorial Bridge that connects West Pittston to Pittston City. (WBRE/WYOU) — The FBI is searching for a Pennsylvania man wanted after a stabbing in New Jersey that killed another man. FBI Newark, Pennsylvania State Police Fugitive Unit, Stroud Regional Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service are asking for help in the search for 26-year-old Ricky ‘Angel’ Vargas of East Stroudsburg. The FBI says Vargas has been charged in federal court with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution after being indicted on first-degree murder charges. (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman was charged with six counts of wire fraud for allegedly obtaining COVID-19 emergency relief unemployment benefits for herself and ineligible prison inmates. According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Muneerah Abdullah, 45, of Chester, PA allegedly filed Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claims for herself and other ineligible recipients, including prison inmates. LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County is mailing out new property assessments for the first time in more than 50 years. About 50,000 property owners will receive reassessments this Friday, and another 50,000 next week. Officials stress these are not tax bills, they will help set 2026 tax rates. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) work zone safety cameras have been catching speeders in record numbers at a local exit on Interstate 80. Construction on Interstate 80 near East Stroudsburg is nothing new, and neither are PennDOT’s work zone safety cameras, but officials from East Stroudsburg Borough say the number of speeders caught by these cameras is excessive, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing drivers down. CHESTNUT HILL TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A home is a total loss after a fire broke out in Monroe County. Crews were called to Red Pine Road, Chestnut Hill Township, just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. West End Fire Company Chief Mike Manfre told 28/22 News two people lived in the home with multiple pets, but no one was injured. Preparing for possible measles cases in NEPA The chief also said that dry conditions caused a brush fire that endangered nearby buildings along with the house fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
