Almost a year’s worth of bargaining between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools could culminate in a tentative agreement Monday. The union will present a package of proposals to its big bargaining team of rank-and-file members at 1 p.m. If the team votes for it, the package will be solidified as a tentative agreement and go up for a vote in the union’s House of Delegates and by full CTU membership. In a statement Friday afternoon, CPS said it’s “pleased with the progress that has been made” and its “goal has always been to reach a fair contract…
MADISON, Wis. — Billionaire Elon Musk’s unprecedented efforts to bolster the conservative candidate in next week’s hotly contested Wisconsin Supreme Court race ran into legal hot water Friday amid accusations that he had broken state election law. Musk announced late Thursday that he planned to hold a Sunday rally in Wisconsin, where he said he would “personally hand over” $1 million checks to two voters who had already cast their ballots “in appreciation for you taking the time to vote.” Wisconsin state law expressly prohibits giving anything of value in exchange for voting — drawing a slew of complaints, including…
A sapphire ring she wore every day and a 1977 graduation tassel from Sycamore High School were among the items recovered from Karen Schepers’ car this week and returned to her family, more proof that the Elgin woman missing nearly 42 years had finally been found. Elgin police Detectives Andrew Houghton and Matt Vartanian said they wanted to make sure the personal belongings found in the car were returned to Schepers’ mother, now 90. “It’s a privilege and an honor for the Elgin Police Department to be able to do this for a family,” Elgin police Chief Ana Lalley said.…
PHOENIX — Nico Hoerner knew being ready for the Chicago Cubs opener in Japan was not a healthy goal. As much as the Cubs second baseman wanted to be with the team in Tokyo last week for their first two regular-season games, staying back at the team’s complex in Mesa, Ariz., was the prudent move if we wanted to be able to play in their domestic-opening series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Even that wasn’t a guarantee after undergoing right flexor tendon surgery in October. But Hoerner’s months of rehab paid off Thursday when he started in the Cubs’ 10-6 win,…
If he isn’t careful, Mayor Brandon Johnson is going to find himself in another political brawl with the City Council. The mayor’s team is preparing to plug a $175 million hole blown in their budget for last year caused by the refusal of Chicago’s partially elected school board to cover a $175 million pension contribution that the city has paid already while expecting reimbursement from Chicago Public Schools. A major question is whether the administration will seek approval from aldermen when it settles on where in the $16.6 billion budget for 2024 to find the cash to close the books…

NEW YORK (AP) — When a protester was caught on video in January at a New York rally against Israel, only her eyes were visible between a mask and headscarf. But days later, photos of her entire face, along with her name and employer, were circulated online. “Months of them hiding their faces went down the drain!” a fledgling technology company boasted in a social media post, claiming its facial-recognition tool had identified the woman despite the coverings. She was anything but a lone target. The same software was also used to review images taken during months of pro-Palestinian marches…
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Police cruisers descended upon Waterfront Park Friday night after multiple gunshots were fired near the base of Big Four Bridge. LMPD spokesperson Sgt. Matt Sanders said officers arrived around 7:30 p.m. and heard gunshots as hundreds of teenagers and adults were crowded in the area. Two groups of teenagers and young adults exchanged gunfire in the area, Sanders said, and the large crowd fled. Police aren’t aware of anyone that was actually shot, he said. Robby Hayes, 12, said he came to the park with his step-father Friday tonight but quickly left the area…

I am one of thousands of Americans sitting in limbo while working abroad on a Fulbright grant. The recent funding freezes have left many of us stranded in foreign countries without funds or guidance on how to proceed. Rather than just detailing this crisis, I want to illustrate Fulbright’s importance through my experience as an English teaching assistant in Cambodia. The United States has a difficult history with Cambodia. In the late 1960s and early ’70s, the U.S. dropped an estimated 500,000 tons of bombs on the country, killing 150,000 civilians. This relentless campaign cleared the path for the Khmer…
