WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner, an Oakland native, Monday was a bittersweet day. The Cubs are part of the first major-league series played at Sutter Heath Park, a Triple-A stadium the Athletics are calling home for at least the next three seasons as they await their permanent new park to be built in Las Vegas. They departed Oakland after 57 seasons in the Coliseum. “I mean, I’d rather be playing in Oakland — Oakland is a special place for me,” said Hoerner, who grew up an A’s fan. “I’m really grateful I got to…
Remember All Lives Matter? It began as a rejoinder, invented to strip power from the Black Lives Matter rally cry born after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a Black teenager killed on his walk home from a convenience store. As a phrase, Black Lives Matter was almost immediately twisted by critics to imply things it didn’t imply — that Black lives matter more than other lives, for starters. The twisting was convenient, because it steered the public discourse away from what Black Lives Matter invited the nation to reckon with, which was the continual…
Clarendon Hills is planning its first Restaurant Week, which will feature 11 of the village’s eateries from April 23 to May 4. The promotion is sponsored by the Clarendon Hills Chamber of Commerce, which came up with the idea during planning of 2025 social events for Chamber members by the organization’s Networking Committee. “During brainstorming, the idea of Clarendon Hill Restaurant Week emerged as a way to showcase local restaurants and attract more visitors to enjoy the town’s dining and shopping experiences, and see what our town has to offer,” said Meredith Lannert, a Chamber of Commerce board member. “In…
The USAID employee traveled to Chicago from Washington, D.C., for the job fair. Like almost all the employees of the U.S. Agency for International Development dismantled by billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, he is on paid administrative leave. “I don’t think there’s any way my job’s coming back,” the federal worker said in the bustling conference room at Malcolm X College in Chicago on Thursday. A federal judge ruled this week that DOGE’s dismantling of the international development agency was likely unconstitutional and said the employees on leave should get their email access reinstated, but appeared to stop…
I sat one morning reading the op-ed “I worked for USAID for 16 years. I saw the profound difference it made.” (March 25). Author Gavi Rosenthal identifies the cruelty in canceling our nation’s collective efforts to treat the people of the world to our true benevolence. Whether it has been to feed the starving, house the homeless, cure the sick or simply console the bereaved. Those are the exact qualities I’d like to think we subscribe to and want our government to facilitate on our behalf across the earth each and every day. No, they do not make us wealthier,…
Controversies over a flood basin at Heather Hills Elementary School and the firing of a former police chief are among the reasons Flossmoor Mayor Michelle Nelson faces a challenge in Tuesday’s election. Village Trustee Joni Bradley-Scott, a real estate agent, said as mayor she would be more inclusive and transparent than Nelson, who was first elected in 2021. “Flossmoor is at a political juncture,” Bradley-Scott said Wednesday. “We can do things as they’ve always been done, or we can make new inroads. And that is asking the community what they want — in terms of businesses, in terms of events,…

A historic painting of George Washington is back in proper hands more than a year after an art theft in Englewood. The painting, a valuable copy on reverse glass of a well-known image painted by American artist Gilbert Stuart, was turned over to Englewood police after a tip to Crime Stoppers. “I think this painting is amazing. It’s really high quality,” said Englewood Police Detective Christian Contos. The painting is done on glass, explained Monica Brown, managing director of fine arts for Freeman’s | Hindman, an auction and appraisal company. Brown looked up the history of the painting and explained…
Employees across the massive U.S. Department of Health and Human Services began receiving notices of dismissal on Tuesday in a major overhaul expected to ultimately lay off up to 10,000 people. The notices come just days after President Trump moved to strip workers of their collective bargaining rights at HHS and other agencies throughout the government. Some employees found out they’d been cut when they arrived at work Tuesday morning and discovered their security badges had been disabled. Others waited in long lines to get into their buildings amid the delays and confusion. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a…
