The Chicago Teachers Union’s team of 65 educators voted in favor of a proposed settlement Monday evening that wrapped up close to a year of negotiations with the school district. Tuesday morning at a press conference, CTU celebrated its hard-fought gains for students and educators. Stacy Davis Gates, president of the teachers union said the district “spent a lot of time marginalizing (the) table.” She reiterated the strong priorities and values baked into the contract. “We’re not closing schools, we’re not giving money to the oligarchy and the elite of this city. We are, quite frankly, resourcing the people who…

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — With thousands of office workers absent from downtown Louisville since the pandemic, businesses have come to rely on five key pillars to attract crowds: conventions, concerts, the University of Louisville Cardinals, bourbon, and baseball. The Louisville Bats say they are a major factor in drawing people downtown, with hopes of welcoming more than 400,000 fans to Slugger Field this season. “This is the most visited sporting venue every year in the state of Kentucky,” said Greg Galiette, president of the Louisville Bats. Many of those visitors travel from outside the city. Sam Cruz, co-founder of Against…

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Carson Kelly had found himself in this situation before and bluntly assessed his reality when he stepped to the plate in the eighth inning Monday night at Sutter Health Park. The Chicago Cubs catcher needed a triple for the cycle, having hit just two in 1,814 big-league plate appearances. And both of those three-baggers had required help, Kelly recalled, from the outfielder falling down in pursuit of the baseball. “Odds are not in my favor, right?” Kelly wryly noted. The 30-year-old was a triple short of the cycle last year with the Texas Rangers just three…

In the end, the leadership of the Chicago Teachers Union accepted a contract that largely mirrored what Chicago Public Schools leadership had offered for months. The spin, of course, from CTU and Mayor Brandon Johnson depicts this four-year labor deal as “transformative” for Chicago’s beleaguered public school system. “This is a complete transformation and a move away from school privatization, layoffs, closures,” the mayor said Tuesday at a news conference. Hardly. A move away from layoffs and closures? For now. But the future doesn’t look bright. The CPS bargaining team, led by CEO Pedro Martinez, agreed to add 800 to…

WASHINGTON — The Social Security Administration said Tuesday that it is investigating the root cause of website outages that have affected the “my Social Security” portal where recipients access their benefits. Notably, individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income, including disabled seniors and low-income adults and children, have reported receiving a notice that said they were “not receiving benefits.” The agency said that notice was a mistake. Roughly 7.4 million seniors, adults and children receive SSI benefits, according to an internal 2023 report. It is unclear how many people received the mistaken message on their portal. In a statement, the agency…

New tariffs on steel and aluminum could force Chicago apartment developers, already affected by elevated interest rates and soaring labor costs, to further delay breaking ground on new projects. The White House began implementing tariffs of 25% on global steel and aluminum imports March 12, saying it wants to stimulate domestic production. But experts say tariffs will also make the crucial materials more expensive, forcing developers to pass higher costs onto tenants, or make it tougher to secure financing and kick off construction. Down the road, that could mean higher rents and fewer choices for those looking for housing. “It’s…

Muslim students who eat halal usually only have a few options in the school cafeteria line once they’ve passed the hamburgers, chicken nuggets and deli sandwiches: a slice of cheese pizza, maybe a salad, fruit, yogurt, a carton of milk. “Just not a lot of healthy, filling choices to pick from,” said Khadija Basith, whose children attend Forest Glen Elementary School in Glen Ellyn. “Even if there aren’t halal options, I want to at least see them offering a good veggie burger or a good fish wrap.” Halal refers to food that is permissible according to Islam’s rules. Meats such…

My favorite story of 2024 was undoubtedly Chicago Christian’s football team coming seemingly out of nowhere to win the Class 2A state championship. The Knights had 10 senior starters, nine of whom started on both offense and defense, and most of them had been going to school together since they were little kids. While the unbelievable story of the 2025 class ended — on the football field, at least — with a remarkable 47-0 win over Maroa-Forsyth in the 2A title game on Nov. 29, one heck of a postscript was added on March 26. That’s when the school celebrated…

NEW YORK — In about 30 years, Kieran Culkin, a great American actor, will make a terrific Shelley “The Machine” Levene, the sad-sack veteran salesman in David Mamet’s masterful “Glengarry Glen Ross,” the 1983 drama about desperate Chicago real estate sharks that surely is the best play ever written about the dehumanizing underbelly of American business, with the honorable exception of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” I hope I am around to see that production. But here in 2025, Culkin, fresh off “Succession” and his much-deserved Oscar win for “A Real Pain,” has his name on the marquee playing…
