It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the tragic passing of Laila Ali, the daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who tragically lost her life while giving birth at a hospital in Canada. NEW YORK — Even if you’re not in the market for a new car, U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on auto imports could make owning one more expensive. The new taxes, which are set to begin April 3 and expand in the following weeks, are estimated to raise the average cost of a car imported from another country by thousands of dollars. But repairs for vehicles that currently use foreign-made parts are also expected to get pricier — and, as a result, hike insurance costs farther down the road. While the White House says these tariffs will foster domestic…

Andrew Benintendi pointed out the obvious Thursday when he noted that the Chicago White Sox weren’t going to become world beaters all of a sudden. An 8-1 opening-day win over the Los Angeles Angels at The Rate got things off on the right foot, but it was only one game. “You never want to look too much into opening day,” he said. “It’s not like we’re going to go out and win 162 games. You’ve got to be realistic. But all the way around, the lineup did well, the pitchers did well, so it’s definitely something to build off of.”…

Deporting migrant criminals was in part what President Donald Trump was elected to do. But he must do this within the bounds of American law. The administration argues that each recently deported Venezuelan was carefully vetted for gang affiliation. The alleged gang members were deported without a hearing in an immigration court; much less a criminal conviction. Trump claims the migrants weren’t entitled to due process, invoking the Alien Enemies Act. This act can only be invoked when there has been a declaration of war. The deportees were frog-marched into a maximum security prison in El Salvador. Many families have…

Chicago-area residents might feel like it’s been a really long winter after enduring stretches of below-normal temperatures in January and February and a couple snowfalls in March. But the lingering cold snaps actually contributed to a proper winter — unlike the record highs and bitter but brief Arctic blasts of recent years. “You look at the numbers — whether it be for Chicago, for Illinois, for the Great Lakes — and it was sort of an unremarkable winter,” said Trent Ford, the Illinois state climatologist. “But it felt like it was intense because we’re getting these types of winters, as…

NEW YORK — A quiet, under-reported revolution has taken place on Broadway. Live streaming, massive video screens and technology that creates digital reproductions so intense that you see every pore and pimple now fight constantly with the human voice and body for domination and your hard-earned money. Oscar Wilde’s buttons would have popped right off his well-tailored waistcoat. Had I been wearing one at “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” so would have mine. But Sarah Snook, the truly formidable star of the new solo Broadway adaptation of Wilde’s 1891 gothic shocker, wrestles all of this technology into submission as she…

In many Catholic parishes, people are gathering for Friday night fish fries because they abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent. In Muslim homes, people are gathering every evening for iftar dinners to break their sunrise-to-sunset fast from all food and drink, including water, during the holy month of Ramadan. Lent, the 40-day period before Easter on the Christian calendar, always occurs at this time of year. Ramadan rotates around the calendar, taking place in various seasons because the Islamic calendar is calculated based on the lunar calendar. This year, though, they coincide, with Christian fasting taking place at…
