Mayor Brandon Johnson named Cook County Commissioner Anthony Quezada Wednesday to succeed Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa on the City Council. Johnson’s choice to represent Logan Square and other Northwest Side neighborhoods that make up the 35th Ward is scheduled to be considered by the council at a special meeting Monday. “The 35th Ward deserves a progressive champion with a proven track record to lead in this moment,” Johnson said in a release announcing the pick. “Anthony is a lifelong Chicagoan who embodies the values of the 35th Ward, and I have no doubt that he will be a tremendous advocate for…
The James Beard Foundation announced Wednesday the finalists vying for its coveted Restaurant and Chef awards, and among them are five Chicago chefs and restaurants, including first-time nominees Galit and Kumiko. “I was just doing some cleaning and repair stuff, and then my phone started blowing up — I was like ‘What’s happening?!’” said Julia Momosé, Kumiko partner and creative director. “It’s really incredible. … It’s just amazing.” Kumiko, a Japanese dining bar in the West Loop, was nominated for Outstanding Bar. Momosé, who has a staff of 18, said Kumiko’s first-ever semifinalist nomination in January was already a whirlwind. “When…
A major Indiana Senate Medicaid bill has been amended and passed the House Ways and Means committee. Senate Bill 2 — authored by Sen. Ryan Mishler, R-Mishawaka — places restrictions on Medicaid, including work requirements on an insurance program for Hoosiers with a medium income and between ages 19 to 64, according to Post-Tribune archives. The bill also gives the Office of the Secretary of Family and Social Services various requirements, including those to report specified Medicaid data to the Medicaid oversight committee. The office must also prepare and present a report to the budget committee about the enforcement of…
A group of Chicago firefighters have accused the city and the Chicago Fire Department of violating their Fourth and 14th Amendment rights during a set of vehicle searches in late February. In a federal lawsuit filed Friday, 23 firefighters alleged that Fire Department investigators went through firefighters’ personal vehicles for guns and weapons on Feb. 27 and 28 at Engine 86’s fire station in the Dunning neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The firefighters, engineers, paramedics and lieutenants were being represented in court by attorneys from their union, the International Association of Firefighters. The lawsuit alleges that fire officials called all…
More than a year after its planned introduction, an environmental ordinance that aims to address decades of discriminatory planning, zoning and land-use policies in Chicago will finally be brought before the City Council. But some community activists are blasting city officials for not making the ordinance available to the public beforehand — a move they call alienating after a mostly collaborative partnership with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration. The ordinance would be the next step after the 2023 release of a cumulative impact assessment that analyzed how exposure to toxins, socioeconomic factors and health conditions vary throughout Chicago. That report was…
One thing you can say in favor of President Donald Trump’s announcement Wednesday from the Rose Garden: He did what he promised during the campaign. For months as stock markets gyrated on news and rumors of Trump’s tariff plans, with the president making protectionist pronouncements and then backtracking in the face of resistance from affected industries, the overarching question in the minds of economists, institutional investors and company executives has been, “Will he really go through with it?” Will he really risk the future of the U.S. economy on an economic philosophy that dates back centuries? We have our answer.…
Virginia Giuffre, one of the women who accused Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew of sexually abusing her as a teen, was due in court just days before she said she was hit by a bus. She shocked her followers on Sunday when she said on an Instagram post she had only 4 days to live after kidney failure. Virginia’s spokesman has since admitted she made a mistake posting it publicly and it was intended for a private Facebook page. However, police said no serious injuries were reported after the incident, and they described it as a minor collision. The bus…

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 1,581 points, or 3.8%, to 40,634, in morning trade Thursday as spooked investors tried to assess the impact of the latest round of Trump administration tariffs. President Trump on Wednesday announced a 10% baseline tariff on all U.S. trading partners and increased levies on dozens of countries that charge higher taxes on American exports. Mr. Trump has said the goal is to make global commerce more fair, spur companies to expand in the U.S. and generate federal revenue. But experts warn that sharply ramping up tariffs on imports, coupled with any retaliatory measures from…
