The AFL community and beyond are heartbroken by the sudden passing of Andrew Krakouer, a man whose life was defined by extraordinary talent, profound resilience, and an unwavering commitment to giving back. At just 42 years old, Andrew left us far too soon on Sunday, March 30th, 2025, after suffering a suspected heart attack in Perth. For those who knew him, whether as a teammate, a mentor, or simply a fan, Andrew was more than a footballer. He was a story of second chances, of courage, and of the power of redemption.

Andrew Krakouer’s football journey was unlike any other. Drafted by Richmond in 2000, Andrew quickly became one of the game’s most electrifying small forwards, playing 102 games and kicking 102 goals for the Tigers. He was an exciting player to watch, his skill and flair making him a fan favorite. However, Andrew’s life took a dramatic turn in 2008 when he was imprisoned. For most people, that might have marked the end of a promising career, but for Andrew, it was the beginning of one of football’s most remarkable comebacks.

After serving his time, Andrew returned to the football field with Swan Districts in the WAFL. He didn’t just play; he dominated. His 2010 season was nothing short of legendary. Winning the prestigious Sandover Medal as the league’s best player, he delivered a Grand Final performance that will be remembered for years to come. With 42 disposals and four goals, Andrew proved to the football world that he was back, better than ever. His performance was a statement: he had overcome the hardships of his past, and now, he was on top of his game.

The following year, Collingwood gave Andrew his AFL lifeline. He repaid them with 35 games, 50 goals, and a standout performance in the 2011 Grand Final, where he kicked three crucial goals to help Collingwood claim the premiership. Andrew’s contribution to the game was undeniable. His passion, his drive, and his love for the sport made him an unforgettable presence on the field, and he became a beloved figure for football fans all over the country.

But Andrew Krakouer’s impact wasn’t limited to the field. His life was about much more than football. He used his story of redemption and resilience to inspire others and lift up those around him. Andrew carried his lived experience with humility and purpose, using his story to mentor young players, advocate for cultural understanding, and challenge racism in sport and society. His work with Corrections Victoria was particularly close to his heart. He spoke openly about his past to push for better systems, to guide others away from the same pitfalls, and to remind everyone that no one is beyond redemption.

As a proud Noongar man, Andrew never forgot where he came from. He was deeply connected to his community, and his involvement went far beyond football. Whether he was visiting schools, speaking to at-risk youth, or simply sharing a laugh with fans, Andrew had a unique ability to make people feel seen and valued. His approach was grounded in love, respect, and the desire to make a difference. His ability to inspire, encourage, and uplift those around him was unparalleled, and he left an enduring legacy that went far beyond his sporting achievements.

The news of Andrew’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football world. Tributes have poured in from former teammates, rivals, and fans alike. His friends and family, as well as those who admired him from afar, are united in grief. But amid this sorrow, there is also a deep sense of gratitude. People are reflecting on the privilege of having witnessed Andrew’s incredible journey—his rise from adversity, his ability to turn his struggles into strength, and his tireless commitment to helping others.

For his family, his children, and those closest to him, the pain is unimaginable. Andrew’s untimely departure has left a hole that cannot be filled, and our thoughts are with them during this devastating time. Losing a loved one, especially one so young, is a heartbreaking tragedy that no words can adequately express. The love and support that have poured in from around the world show just how much Andrew was loved and respected.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the man he was: a fighter, a leader, and someone who turned his struggles into strength for others. Andrew Krakouer’s life was a testament to resilience, to the power of second chances, and to the belief that people can change. His story wasn’t just about football—it was about hope, redemption, and making the most of every opportunity. He proved that no matter the obstacles, one can rise above and make a meaningful impact on the world.

In honor of Andrew’s memory, we must continue the work he started. We must support those who need a second chance, stand up against injustice, and remember that every person’s story is worth telling. Andrew’s life serves as a reminder that the journey of redemption is one worth pursuing and that the greatest legacy we can leave is not in what we achieve for ourselves but in how we help others.

Rest easy, Krak. You gave us so much—on the field and off it. Your legacy will live on in the countless lives you touched and in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing you. Your story is one of courage, strength, and love, and we will carry that with us as we continue to navigate the world you helped make a better place. Your journey may have ended too soon, but the impact of your life will resonate for generations to come.
