Adam Selwood Death and Obituary – The Australian Football League (AFL) community is mourning the sudden death of former West Coast Eagles player Adam Selwood at the age of 41. The tragic news comes just months after the death of his twin brother, Troy Selwood, further deepening the grief experienced by the Selwood family. Adam’s passing has left the AFL world in shock, as he was widely respected not only for his skill on the field but also for his character off it.

Adam Selwood’s death is the second devastating loss for his family in a short period. In February, Adam’s twin brother, Troy, passed away after a long battle with mental health challenges. The Selwood family, including parents Bryce and Maree, as well as brothers Joel and Scott, have now suffered two profound losses that have reverberated through the football community.

In a statement released by Adam’s wife, Fiona, and the Selwood family, they expressed their immense sorrow at his death. The family described Adam as a loving husband, father, son, and brother. His personality was described as one that could light up any room, and his ability to make people feel special was a quality cherished by those close to him. “His spirit, his kindness, and the joy he brought to every room will stay with us always,” the family said in their statement.

Adam Selwood was born in Bendigo and began his AFL journey when he was drafted by the West Coast Eagles in 2003. Over the next decade, he played 187 games for the club, becoming a key figure in their midfield. His crowning achievement came in 2006 when the Eagles secured the AFL premiership by defeating Sydney, a moment that solidified his place in club history. After retiring in 2013, Selwood remained involved with the West Coast Eagles, contributing in various coaching and staff roles.

His death comes at a time when the Selwood family is already grieving the loss of Troy, who had been battling mental health issues for years. Adam had recently spoken about his brother’s struggles with mental health and how they had inspired him to run a half-marathon for the charity zero2hero. This Western Australian charity focuses on mental health leadership and suicide prevention, causes that were close to Adam’s heart. Adam said that participating in the run was a way to honor his brother’s memory and continue the shared love for running that he and Troy had enjoyed growing up.

West Coast Eagles premiership coach John Worsfold paid a heartfelt tribute to Adam, remembering him as the ultimate team player who always put the club and his teammates first. “Adam was a great teammate who loved the club, loved his footy,” Worsfold said. “He always gave 100% and connected with everyone he was involved with.” Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson also expressed his sorrow, stating, “It breaks your heart.”

The grief surrounding Adam’s death is compounded by the fact that his former teammate, Adam Hunter, also passed away in the same week as Troy Selwood in February. Hunter, who was 43, had been a key player for the Eagles, further adding to the collective sense of loss within the West Coast community.

The Selwood family’s tragic losses have left an indelible mark on the AFL world, with both the football community and fans worldwide extending their condolences. The Selwoods, who have had a profound impact on Australian football, are remembered not just for their sporting achievements, but for their kindness, resilience, and the strength they continue to show during such difficult times.
