CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — After a long night of back and forth on Capitol Hill, House Republicans approved a budget plan that has the backing of President Donald Trump. But in Charlotte, education leaders argue some of what’s proposed will harm the area’s largest district.
Members of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education are adamant that the proposed plan would force them to cut vital staff and services.
“If you look at it, it’s two critical areas. It’s funding around free and reduced lunch. So those students that come from lower-income, making sure that they are fed because some of the only meals they get sometimes are at school. And then the other is Medicaid cuts that would affect our IEP and 504 students,” said board member Summer Nunn.
Nunn told Queen City News that members of Congress, specifically North Carolina Republicans Tim Moore and Mark Harris are not looking deeply enough into what’s within the budget plan.
In statements to Queen City News, both Harris and Moore have refuted what the board has said. Moore went as far as to say that there will be no cuts to specific Medicaid or school nutrition programs.
