Juan Vasquez Pulido Obituary, Death; – A Santa Ana inmate succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation with his cellmate, as confirmed by officials to KTLA on Friday. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has identified the deceased inmate as 38-year-old Juan Vasquez Pulido, who was reportedly without a permanent residence.
According to the OCSD, Pulido was arrested by Anaheim police and subsequently booked into the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana on February 5 for offenses related to drugs. On the same day, Pulido was placed in a holding cell with another inmate, 23-year-old Irving Josue Morales.
While both inmates were in the booking area of the Intake Release Center awaiting housing assignments, Morales assaulted Pulido, rendering him unconscious.
Information regarding the incident remains sparse, and it has not been clarified whether any weapons were involved in the assault or the duration of time Pulido was unconscious before being discovered by officials. KTLA reached out to OCSD for additional details regarding the incident but did not receive an immediate response.
Upon discovering Pulido unconscious in the cell, OCSD reported that deputies administered medical assistance until paramedics arrived to transport him to a nearby hospital. At the hospital, Pulido was placed in a medically induced coma, according to officials. He passed away 16 days later. Initially, Morales faced charges of attempted murder, as stated by OCSD.
However, following Pulido’s death, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office may consider additional charges against Morales, as indicated in a release from the sheriff’s department. KTLA inquired whether the initial charge of attempted murder was filed prior to or as a result of the attack, but did not receive an immediate response.
The department stated, “The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the in-custody death,” and added, “The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct an in-custody death review. No further information will be disclosed at this time.”
