(PINPOINT WEATHER) — Good Saturday morning and welcome to the weekend! We have an active weekend of weather ahead, as we track a very potent area of low pressure to our west.
Today’s forecast features cold temperatures, with a few rain showers at times. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s through the day, with overcast skies. It will not rain all day, but everyone will likely have to encounter a shower or two at some point.
There will be enough cold air for some patchy freezing rain in the mountains. Ice accumulations will be much lower than earlier this week, however, some isolated slick travel is possible. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Ashe and Watauga counties until 7 p.m. this evening.
As the cold front approaches tonight, expect temperatures to rise overnight into the 50s. The cold front will arrive around sunrise on Sunday morning, bringing a gusty line of rain and thunderstorms with it.
We have issued a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day for Sunday. Sunday morning will feature 40-50 mph gust as the line of storms moves through, but isolated damaging wind gust up to 60 mph are a possibility. Damaging wind gust will be the main threat if we see any severe storms, but an isolated tornado is also possible.

The good news with Sunday’s forecast is that the unsettled weather will be over by Sunday afternoon, with temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. Increasing sunshine as well. It will remain breezy at times, with 20-30 mph gust around the Charlotte metro.
Wind gusts Sunday afternoon across the mountains will be between 40-50 mph, but isolated 60 mph gusts are possible for the highest mountain peaks. A High Wind Watch is in effect for Ashe, Watauga, and Avery counties on Sunday.

Conditions will be cool and quiet on President’s Day and Tuesday, with temperatures in the 50s.
However, another storm system will move in on Wednesday, possibly bringing a wintry mix to the area. Still too early for details on that system, but we will keep you posted.
