A tragic incident occurred during a high school hammer throwing event at the University of Colorado Springs (UCCS) on Sunday, where a father was fatally struck by a hammer in front of spectators. The accident happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse during an indoor event hosted by the Colorado United Track Club.
During the competition, an athlete threw a 25-pound hammer, which unexpectedly flew into the stands despite certified safety barriers being in place. The victim, identified as the father of a Vista Ridge High School athlete, was struck while attempting to shield his wife and son from the oncoming object. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The University of Colorado Springs has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, with Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet stating, “We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved.” Colorado Springs Police have launched an investigation into the tragedy.
