ROCK HILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — “We have crews working in 12-hour shifts,” said South Carolina Department of Transportation.
South Carolina transportation officials say they’ve prepped state roads ahead of the second extreme weather event in January.
Hannah Robinson with the department says crews were out on Monday brining the roads.
“We had to restock some of the salt since the last storm last week. And so we’ve restocked in some areas. But, you know, we’re continuing to pretreat and our crews are working in 12-hour shifts and they’ll continue to do so.”
Robinson says they used salt brine for the interstate roads and salt for areas they think will have heavy accumulation.
“Then we have a de-icing method that we add into the mix, which is calcium chloride. And in some situations, we need to melt ice and calcium chloride does that, kind of heats the ice up.”
