CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The snow drought is officially over as snow, sleet, and freezing rain made its way across the Charlotte area on Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, where its snowing, accumulations will happen quickly due to very cold ground temperatures, and the snow and ice will stick and freeze.
“There will be enough snow and ice accumulations to result in hazardous travel conditions through at least Saturday morning, and longer where heavier accumulations occur,” NWS said.
NWS reports there is still a large amount of uncertainty on location and amounts of greatest ice accumulations. Power outages are expected where the heaviest ice accumulations happen.
Black ice will be a subsequent concern over the weekend.
Over three days from now until Monday, the NWS projects 1-2 inches of snow for the Charlotte area, with 2-3 inches in the Shelby area, 3-4 inches in the Hickory area, and 4-6 near Boone.
