Kaiden Bailey,Sandro Lazo GENERAL; – It has been 131 days since the passing of my son. While it is often said that time eases the pain, I can assure you that nothing becomes easier after the loss of a child,” stated Cathie Bailey.
Bailey is the mother of Kaiden Bailey, a 25-year-old victim of a tragic accident. She was among those present at a roundtable discussion focused on strategies to prevent fatal accidents in Clovis on Monday evening.
In July, Kaiden was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Fowler and Perrin. Bailey recounted that upon being hit, her son was thrown 125 feet and then skidded an additional 60 feet. “At least ten witnesses to this incident left the scene without calling 9-1-1, including the driver responsible for the collision. My son was still alive at that moment, yet everyone abandoned him to suffer,” Bailey expressed.
Just days after this heartbreaking event, 16-year-old Sandro Lazo was riding his bicycle less than a mile from his home when he was also struck by a vehicle at the same intersection. According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the driver involved in Lazo’s accident did not have a stop sign at the location where he collided with the young cyclist.
William Lazo, Sandro’s father, voiced his frustration over the lack of progress in installing a traffic signal at that intersection. “The past four months have been incredibly challenging. We are doing our best to support one another,” William Lazo remarked.
Fresno County Board of Supervisor Nathan Magsig emphasized the need for improved roadway safety as Clovis continues to expand. “As the city grows, there must be better coordination regarding road closures and the establishment of new traffic patterns to ensure vehicles travel at safe speeds,” Magsig stated.
Lazo expressed his desire for his son’s memory to lead to meaningful change. “We will always remember him. Our love for him will endure, and he will forever hold a place in our hearts. We will always take pride in him,” Lazo affirmed. He also mentioned that they have gathered over 2,300 signatures on a Change.org petition advocating for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection.
