Jessinya Mina Obituary, Death; – A woman was tragically killed by her 2-year-old child during an accidental shooting in northeast Fresno last week, according to police reports. The victim has been identified by the Fresno Police Department as 22-year-old Jessinya Mina.
The incident occurred on Friday night at the Butterfly Grove Apartment complex, located at the intersection of Fresno Street and San Jose Avenue. Authorities indicate that Mina’s toddler accessed an unsecured firearm within the apartment.
Lt. Paul Cervantes of the Fresno Police Department stated, “The firearm was stored in a location where the toddler accessed the firearm, and at some point, while handling that particular weapon, the toddler was able to manipulate the trigger, resulting in the firearm discharging and striking Mina as she lay in bed.”
Upon arrival at the apartment complex, officers found Mina’s 18-year-old boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez, attempting to transport her to the hospital. First responders intervened and took Mina to the hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
In a statement to Action News, Mina’s sister expressed that Sanchez had disregarded Mina’s pleas to refrain from keeping a firearm in their home.
