Luigi Mangione ARRESTED; – A man is currently in police custody in Pennsylvania in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as reported by ABC News on Monday.
Authorities have identified the individual as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione. He was traveling on a Greyhound bus and made a stop at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where a witness recognized him from images disseminated by law enforcement, according to sources.
Mangione possessed a fraudulent New Jersey identification that corresponded with the ID used by the assailant to check into a hostel on the Upper West Side prior to the shooting. Additionally, he was found with a handwritten manifesto that criticized healthcare corporations for prioritizing profits over patient care, as reported by The New York Times.
Altoona police apprehended Mangione on firearm-related charges, as stated by New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a press briefing. She indicated that Mangione is considered a “person of interest” in the case.
On Wednesday morning, Thompson was fatally shot in midtown Manhattan in what authorities describe as a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack.” A newly obtained video by ABC shows the gunman waiting for Thompson to exit the New York Hilton Midtown before crossing the street to shoot him. This video has not yet been made public.
The shooter escaped the scene on foot and subsequently on a rental bicycle before boarding a bus outside New York City. Law enforcement has been unable to track down the suspect since the incident. Sources informed ABC that the NYPD is dispatching detectives to Altoona to interrogate Mangione.
