Human remains were discovered over the weekend in a Cook County forest preserve near northwest suburban Wheeling, according to officials.
The skeletal remains were found on the west side of the Des Plaines River at Dam No. 1 Woods-West near the 700 block of South Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling after a caller contacted police just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
An autopsy Monday was inconclusive and pending police investigation, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Authorities had not determined the victim’s identity or official cause of death, a forest preserves spokesman said in an emailed statement. It was unclear how long the remains had been there.
The Cook County sheriff’s police are leading the death investigation.
