It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the tragic news of the passing of our beloved student, Harpy Helsvenn, who was involved in a fatal vehicular accident on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Harpy, a bright and vibrant soul, was only 32 years old. Her loss has left a gaping void in the hearts of those who knew her and a deep sorrow within the Michigan State University (MSU) community and beyond. As we come to terms with the shock of her untimely passing, we reflect on the life of this incredible woman who brought so much joy and love to everyone she met.

Harpy was born on October 5, 1992, in Columbia, South Carolina. From a young age, she demonstrated a unique spirit that would stay with her throughout her life. As she grew older, Harpy’s journey became one of self-discovery and courage. She was not just a student; she was an advocate, a friend, a creator, and a beacon of authenticity. Her passion for life and her desire to be true to herself inspired everyone she encountered. Harpy was an artist at heart, with a deep love for creative expression through various forms of art. Whether it was painting, drawing, playing music, or indulging in her love for anime, Harpy radiated joy through her work. She had a natural talent for creating beauty, but what made her stand out the most was her ability to make those around her feel seen and valued.

Those who were fortunate enough to call Harpy their friend often recount late-night breakfasts and deep conversations where laughter filled the air, and jokes and stories flowed freely. These moments were marked by warmth, inclusivity, and an undeniable sense of joy that only Harpy could foster. She had a special ability to bring people together, offering comfort and encouragement whenever anyone needed it most. Her sense of humor was infectious, often sharing funny videos and making people laugh until they couldn’t breathe. Harpy had the kind of laughter that was contagious, and her playful, caring nature made everyone feel like they belonged.

While her personal creativity flourished, Harpy’s academic journey at MSU was equally remarkable. She was pursuing a degree in pre-law, driven by her passion for justice and equality. Harpy’s desire to advocate for the marginalized and fight for the voiceless led her to become a strong voice for the LGBTQIA2S+ community on campus. Her dedication to ensuring that everyone had a safe, welcoming place to express themselves and be heard made her an invaluable member of the MSU community. Harpy’s activism and advocacy were not limited to the university setting; she worked tirelessly to create opportunities for others and was actively involved in local community projects aimed at promoting equality and acceptance. She was determined to build a better world for future generations, where justice and compassion would reign.

Her life was driven by her deep sense of duty to others, and she carried herself with dignity and grace. Even in the face of personal challenges, Harpy remained committed to her goals, knowing that her work could make a difference. She didn’t just talk about the need for change; she took action. Harpy was a fierce supporter of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, creating safe spaces, organizing events, and mentoring students who needed guidance and support. She fought for the right of every person to be treated with dignity and respect, believing that love and kindness could change the world for the better.

Harpy is survived by her partner, Sophia Charlotte Victoria Sinclair, and her extended family and friends who are devastated by her sudden loss. Sophia, who shared a deep bond with Harpy, has expressed the profound emptiness she feels without the person who was her best friend, confidante, and partner. Harpy’s family is struggling to understand how such a bright and promising life was cut short so suddenly, and they are deeply heartbroken that she will no longer be with them physically. Her loss is felt deeply by all who knew her, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

The MSU community has been deeply affected by Harpy’s passing. Her friends, classmates, professors, and all those who interacted with her in various capacities are mourning the loss of someone who embodied so much goodness and hope. The outpouring of grief has been overwhelming, as many people who knew Harpy are struggling to find the words to express the depth of their sorrow. As her friends and peers process this tragedy, they find themselves holding onto the memories they shared with her—the conversations, the laughter, the support, and the profound lessons she imparted about life, love, and standing up for what is right.

In the wake of her passing, MSU has provided counseling and support services to students and staff who are struggling to cope with the loss. Harpy’s friends and fellow students are encouraged to reach out to MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at 517-355-8270, where support is available 24/7. The need for healing and comfort during such a difficult time is immense, and the MSU community has come together to provide as much support as possible for those affected by the loss of such an influential and inspiring individual.

As the grief-stricken community gathers to remember Harpy, a celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2025, from 1 PM to 4 PM at The Avenue, located at 2021 E Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48912. This event will provide friends, family, and the MSU community the opportunity to come together and honor the life of this remarkable woman who touched so many lives. It will be a chance for everyone who knew Harpy to reflect on the joy she brought into their lives and to share their memories of the moments they spent together.

Though Harpy’s life was tragically cut short, her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched. Her advocacy for justice, her passion for equality, and her boundless love for others will continue to inspire those who knew her. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the incredible impact she made on the world. Harpy’s life serves as a powerful reminder to live authentically, to stand up for those who are marginalized, and to embrace every moment with kindness and love.

Harpy Helsvenn’s memory will live on through the work she did, the love she shared, and the lives she changed. Her legacy will continue to inspire and motivate all who had the privilege of knowing her. May we carry forward her passion for justice, her love for others, and her unshakable belief in the power of kindness and community. Rest in peace, Harpy. You will always be remembered and loved.
