Washington, D.C. – A house fire in Southeast has claimed the lives of two individuals, with an 85-year-old woman hospitalized in critical condition.
Around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, D.C. Fire and EMS responded to a fire near 23rd Street and Southern Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered a 64-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman dead on the second floor of a townhome. Firefighters rescued an 85-year-old woman with a ladder from the same floor, and she was taken to the hospital in a life-threatening condition.
The D.C. Fire and EMS reported that the Arson Task Force is investigating the fire, but the cause has not yet been disclosed.
D.C. Fire and EMS reported that multiple dogs were found in the home’s basement in good condition and were safely taken to Animal Control. Fire officials plan to return to the neighborhood on Monday morning to distribute fire safety materials, including smoke alarms, and offer free installations if needed.
