NEW YORK, N.Y. — U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday condemned a reported Israeli pager attack in Lebanon that allegedly resulted in civilian casualties, calling for a full investigation into the incident.
The attack reportedly involved the detonation of thousands of pagers in public spaces, causing widespread injuries and deaths, according to statements from the congresswoman.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ocasio-Cortez criticized the Israeli operation, arguing that it “clearly and unequivocally violates international humanitarian law.”
She also expressed concerns over the potential involvement of U.S. resources in the development of the technology used, urging Congress to demand answers from the U.S. State Department.
“Israel’s pager attack in Lebanon detonated thousands of handheld devices across a slew of public spaces, seriously injuring and killing innocent civilians,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “Congress needs a full accounting of the attack.”
The congresswoman’s remarks come amid escalating tensions in the region between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based militant group backed by Iran. There have been previous reports of covert electronic warfare tactics being used in the region, though detailed information on the recent pager-related explosions remains sparse. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for clarity on the nature and impact of the attack.
The Israeli government has not yet officially responded to allegations regarding the use of pager technology in Lebanon. Israel has a long-standing policy of not commenting on specific military operations, particularly those targeting Hezbollah. Hezbollah itself has not confirmed whether it or its assets were targeted in the incident.
Ocasio-Cortez’s call for U.S. condemnation of the attack has drawn attention within Washington, where lawmakers are increasingly divided over the nation’s approach to the Israel-Hezbollah conflict and broader U.S. involvement in Middle Eastern affairs.
