EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — With the school year underway, the East Brunswick Police Department is urging motorists to be vigilant when driving near school buses and in school zones. In a statement shared on social media Wednesday, officers emphasized the risks faced by children as they get on and off buses.
“Students of all ages are unpredictable,” the department said. “Therefore, prepare for the unexpected and maintain a safe distance from school buses at all times.”
The East Brunswick Police Department outlined specific safety reminders for drivers. Motorists are required to stop at least 25 feet from a school bus with flashing red lights on a two-lane highway or any road without a physical divider, regardless of the direction they are traveling. This rule also applies to divided highways when drivers are on the same side of the road as the bus.
Drivers approaching from the opposite side of a divided highway may pass a stopped bus at 10 mph or less and must continue at that speed until they are fully past the bus. Additionally, vehicles must slow to 10 mph or less when passing a bus that is picking up or dropping off students directly at a school or day camp.
The department’s reminder comes as school buses return to the roads, posing potential hazards during peak hours. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution in these areas to ensure student safety.
