OLD BRIDGE, N.J. — A motorboat explosion at Raritan Marina on Wednesday afternoon left two men injured, one of whom was thrown into the water, according to authorities. The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the marina located at 1707 Route 35 in Laurence Harbor.
Old Bridge Police were dispatched to the scene after reports of the explosion, which occurred as the boat was reportedly refueling. The force of the blast ejected a 57-year-old man from Old Bridge into the water. Nearby bystanders quickly pulled him to safety. He sustained burns to his face and legs and was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for immediate medical treatment.
A second man on the boat, a 47-year-old resident of South Amboy, suffered injuries to his stomach and arms caused by glass from the explosion. He was transported to Bayshore Medical Center for treatment.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, though authorities have stated that it does not appear to be suspicious. As the investigation continues, Raritan Marina remains closed.
Both men are currently hospitalized, and no further information on their conditions has been released.
