AVALON, N.J. — Avalon Police and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating two consecutive “swatting” incidents that prompted large-scale emergency responses over the weekend. Authorities say the calls, which turned out to be hoaxes, targeted a residential property and a nearby hotel.
The first incident occurred on Saturday at 10:17 a.m. when the Cape May County Joint Dispatch Center received a call reporting a bomb threat at a hotel located near the 7700 block of Dune Drive. Avalon Police, along with the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit, responded to the scene. After a thorough search, no explosives were found, and the building was cleared without incident.
A second swatting call was made on Sunday at 4:22 p.m., alleging that a murder had occurred at a residence on the same block. The caller warned that police could also be in danger if they approached the house. In response, Avalon Police and the Cape May County SWAT Team swiftly mobilized and secured the area. Upon arrival, authorities found renters at the property, who confirmed that no crime had been committed. The property was searched and cleared by law enforcement.
“These incidents are not just pranks; they are criminal actions with serious consequences,” said a representative of the Avalon Police Department in a statement. “Our investigators are actively working to identify those responsible.”
No injuries were reported in either incident, but the swatting calls have raised concerns within the community. The ongoing investigation seeks to locate the individual or individuals responsible for these hoax calls. According to Avalon Police, anyone found guilty of such actions will face prosecution to the full extent of the law.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding these incidents to contact the Avalon Police Department at (609) 967-3411.
