It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of James Richard “Pete” Pantel III, age 35, of Zion, Illinois. Surrounded by the warmth and comfort of his devoted family, Pete passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, after a courageous battle with illness. Though his time with us was far too short, Pete’s presence left an indelible mark on everyone blessed to know him.
Born on November 15, 1989, Pete was a bright light from the very beginning. He grew up in Zion, Illinois, where he developed deep-rooted connections in the community. A proud graduate of Zion-Benton Township High School, Pete was known for his intelligence, quick wit, and generous heart. He later pursued a career in the skilled trades, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike for his unwavering work ethic and meticulous craftsmanship.
Pete was not just known for his talent and drive but for his remarkable ability to bring joy to those around him. Whether it was his infectious laugh, his knack for storytelling, or his habit of showing up exactly when someone needed him most, Pete had a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, and loved. He was a rock to his family, a loyal friend, and a fierce protector to those he cherished.
Above all, Pete was a family man. He was a devoted son, a cherished brother, a proud uncle, and a loving partner. His family was the center of his world, and he never missed a chance to be present at family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, or quiet evenings spent together. Pete’s loyalty knew no bounds—he stood as a pillar of strength, always putting others before himself.
Pete is survived by his beloved parents, James “Jim” Pantel Jr. and Mary Pantel; his sisters, Rachel (Chris) Moran and Emily Pantel; his nieces and nephews, Jackson, Ellie, and Ava, whom he adored beyond measure; his loving partner, Sarah Torres; his extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who became like family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, whom he held close to his heart, and several close friends whose memories he carried with him every day.
Pete lived life with passion and purpose. He loved being outdoors—whether fishing, camping, or hiking. He found peace near the water and strength in nature’s simplicity. A die-hard fan of the Chicago Bears, Pete never missed a game, no matter how tough the season. He had an eclectic taste in music and found joy in cooking for loved ones, especially at Sunday dinners filled with laughter and warmth.
To say Pete will be missed is an understatement. His absence leaves a silence that echoes deeply, yet his spirit will forever remain in the laughter of his nieces and nephews, in the golden sunsets he loved so much, and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Pete’s life will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church, beginning with visitation at 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 PM. Friends and family are encouraged to share stories and wear Chicago Bears attire in his honor.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to local mental health awareness initiatives, causes close to Pete’s heart.
Though we say goodbye for now, Pete’s legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter will continue to inspire all of us. Rest easy, dear Pete. Your memory is a blessing, and your love will guide us forever.
