On July 1, 2025, the Hammond Police Department (HPD) made a significant arrest in a disturbing case involving the online solicitation of a minor. Steven Paul Gauthreaux, a 38-year-old resident of Covington, Louisiana, was apprehended by HPD detectives in collaboration with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. This arrest marks another step in the ongoing efforts to protect children from the dangers of online predators and ensure that those who attempt to exploit vulnerable youth face justice.

Gauthreaux has been charged with one count of Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile and one count of Computer-aided Solicitation of a Minor. These charges stem from his illegal sexual conversations with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old child, coupled with his attempts to arrange a meeting for sexual purposes. For several days, Gauthreaux engaged in inappropriate and explicit discussions with an individual he thought was a minor. After a series of exchanges, Gauthreaux arranged a time and location to meet this supposed child in Hammond, Louisiana. However, what he did not know was that the “14-year-old” he was speaking with was an undercover officer involved in the investigation.

On the morning of July 1, Gauthreaux arrived at the agreed-upon location in Hammond, only to find HPD detectives, K9 officers, and narcotics detectives waiting for him. He was promptly arrested and taken into custody without incident. This arrest is the culmination of a careful, multi-day investigation led by HPD detectives and supported by the ICAC Task Force, a crucial resource in the fight against online child exploitation.

The investigation was initiated as part of a concerted effort by HPD and the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office to combat internet crimes involving minors. Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. of the Hammond Police Department expressed his commitment to the safety of the community and particularly to the protection of children. “I take the safety of our community very seriously, especially when it comes to our children. Back in January, we added two detectives to the Attorney General’s Office ICAC Task Force without hesitation. Since then, they have worked tirelessly on cases like this to make sure these vile offenders don’t victimize our children in the community,” Chief Bergeron said in a statement following the arrest.

The ICAC Task Force is a collaboration between law enforcement agencies, aiming to identify, investigate, and prosecute individuals involved in the exploitation of minors online. With the rise of the internet and social media, these kinds of crimes have become a growing concern for law enforcement agencies nationwide. The use of technology has made it easier for predators to exploit vulnerable children, and the ICAC Task Force plays a critical role in disrupting these criminal activities before they can harm innocent victims.

The arrest of Gauthreaux highlights the significant work done by the HPD and its partnerships with state and federal agencies in combating internet crimes against children. As technology continues to advance, law enforcement agencies are faced with an ever-growing challenge to protect minors from predators who use the internet as a means to exploit them. Through partnerships like the one between HPD and the Attorney General’s Office, law enforcement is better equipped to tackle this serious issue and ensure that those who prey on children are held accountable for their actions.

The arrest of Steven Paul Gauthreaux serves as a stark reminder to the public about the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilance when it comes to internet safety, particularly for children. Parents and guardians are urged to be proactive in monitoring their children’s online activities, educating them about the potential risks of the internet, and having open conversations about safe online behavior. In a world where technology is an integral part of daily life, it is essential for families to understand the potential dangers and take steps to protect children from falling victim to these kinds of crimes.

Gauthreaux’s arrest is not only a significant step in this specific case but also a clear message to other potential predators that law enforcement is watching and will take swift action to protect minors from harm. The dedicated work of HPD detectives and the ICAC Task Force should serve as a deterrent to anyone contemplating engaging in illegal activities online.

While the arrest has brought some relief to the community, it is also a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities children face in the digital age. As technology continues to evolve, the need for continuous efforts to protect children from online exploitation becomes even more critical. The work of agencies like the ICAC Task Force is vital in ensuring that minors are not exposed to the dangers that lurk online and that predators are caught before they can cause harm.

In the wake of Gauthreaux’s arrest, law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information regarding online predators or other criminal activities involving minors to come forward. Tip lines and other reporting mechanisms are available to ensure that the public can assist law enforcement in preventing these heinous crimes from continuing. By remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious behavior, the community can play an active role in safeguarding children from the dangers of the digital world.

As the case against Gauthreaux moves forward, prosecutors will work to ensure that justice is served for the victim, and the community will continue to rally behind the efforts of law enforcement to prevent future tragedies. The swift action of HPD and the ICAC Task Force in this case demonstrates the commitment of local authorities to keeping children safe, but it also serves as a reminder that the fight against online predators is ongoing.

For the family of the victim and the community at large, the arrest brings a glimmer of hope that justice will be served. It also underscores the importance of continued efforts to combat internet crimes against children and protect the most vulnerable members of society. Through collaboration, vigilance, and education, it is possible to make the digital world a safer place for everyone, particularly for children who are too often preyed upon by those with malicious intent.
