ANNAPOLIS, MD—The Maryland Department of Natural Resources – Natural Resources Police has issued a warning to boaters navigating the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal rivers. Due to the heavy winds and rains brought by Tropical Storm Debby, there is an increased risk of debris in the water, which could pose significant hazards to marine navigation.
Boaters are advised to be vigilant as logs and other submerged objects can cause considerable damage to vessels. Additionally, the extreme conditions have the potential to displace navigation buoys from their stations, further complicating safe travel.
The Natural Resources Police urge those planning to boat in the coming days to exercise extreme caution. Submerged debris can be difficult, if not impossible, to detect and may create dangerous situations without warning. In case of boating emergencies, individuals should call 911, and for non-emergencies, the Natural Resources Police communications can be reached at 410-260-8888.
