UTICA, NY — The Utica Police Department (UPD) has announced a major breakthrough in a months-long homicide investigation, confirming the arrest of 32-year-old Darius Steward in connection with the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Omar Mitchell, who was tragically killed on April 22, 2025.

After weeks of diligent investigation, coordination among multiple law enforcement agencies, and cross-state efforts, Steward was located and taken into custody in Springfield, Illinois, and is now back in Oneida County where he has been formally charged and arraigned.

    The Homicide

The original incident occurred on April 22, when officers responded to a call for a shooting in the city of Utica. Upon arrival, authorities found Omar Mitchell suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The loss of Omar Mitchell, a 33-year-old man remembered by friends and family as warm, loyal, and deeply loved, sent shockwaves through the local community. Vigils were held in the days that followed as family members called for answers and justice.

    Grand Jury Indictment

Following the initial investigation, the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office quickly brought the case before a Grand Jury. Based on the evidence presented, the Grand Jury returned an indictment for Murder in the Second Degree, a significant legal step signaling strong prosecutorial intent to hold the suspect fully accountable for the crime.

    The Manhunt

Once indicted, the case was handed over to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit, which collaborated closely with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Utica Police Department’s Warrant Unit to locate the suspect, Darius Steward.

Through intelligence gathering and investigative leads, authorities received credible information indicating that Steward had fled to Springfield, Illinois, in an apparent effort to avoid capture. Thanks to a swift and coordinated law enforcement response, Steward was located and arrested without incident.

On June 23, 2025, he was extradited back to Oneida County, where he was formally booked and arraigned on charges of Second-Degree Murder.

    Law Enforcement Statement

The Utica Police Department expressed its appreciation for the multi-agency collaboration that led to Steward’s arrest. In a statement, UPD praised the seamless teamwork between local, county, and federal authorities, saying:

“This arrest is the result of focused investigative efforts and unwavering commitment across jurisdictions. We thank our partners at the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force for their dedication in locating and bringing the suspect back to face justice.”

The Oneida County District Attorney’s Office also confirmed that it will move forward with prosecution, and the case is expected to proceed in county court in the coming weeks.

     Remembering Omar Mitchell

While the arrest marks a crucial step toward justice, those who loved Omar Mitchell continue to grieve his loss. Known for his kindness, infectious energy, and deep ties to his community, Omar’s death left a lasting impact on those around him. Friends describe him as someone who always put others first and brought people together.

“He didn’t deserve this. He had so much life ahead of him,” one family member shared. “We just want justice and peace.”

    Community Reactions & Next Steps

News of the arrest has brought a mix of relief and reflection to the Utica community. For months, uncertainty surrounded the case, and now with the suspect in custody, many are hopeful that justice will prevail.

The case will move forward in Oneida County Court, where Darius Steward will face trial for the murder of Omar Mitchell. Prosecutors are expected to build their case on witness accounts, forensic evidence, and electronic records gathered during the investigation.

Community leaders are urging residents to remain engaged, offer support to Mitchell’s family, and continue speaking out against violence in all forms.

     A Message from Authorities

Law enforcement continues to encourage anyone with information related to this case or other violent crimes to come forward. As demonstrated in this investigation, no distance is too far, and no time too long when it comes to seeking justice for victims and their families.

If you or someone you know has information that could assist in an ongoing investigation, contact the Utica Police Department or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Rest in peace, Omar Mitchell. Your life mattered, and your memory fuels the pursuit of justice.
