LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Nearly 1 million people in the U.S. are living with Parkinson’s Disease, and the number is supposed to rise to 1.2 million by 2030.

Parkinson’s Disease causes degeneration of the nerve cells in the brain and affects the mobility of patients.

As we start Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, Norton Healthcare continues to be involved in research designed to detect the disease earlier.

Dr. Justin Phillips, Movement Disorders Neurologist for Norton, joined WDRB Mornings on Tuesday to talk about the disease and how Norton is involved in the research.

“We’re involved with research in biomarker testing to determine if we can give an even more accurate prognosis based on quantitative measurement,” Phillips said. “In return, we hope we can diagnose people before they’re symptomatic.”

Doctors suggest regular exercise to help prevent getting Parkinson’s Disease.
