MORNINGSIDE, MD – Three individuals, one adult and two juveniles, have been charged by the Prince George’s County Police Department in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred in Morningside on Tuesday afternoon. The adult, identified as 25-year-old Deandre Boyd from Washington, DC, and two 16-year-old males also from Washington, DC, are accused of killing 38-year-old Fernando Alvarenga Cuellar of Morningside.
The incident took place on August 6, 2024, around 2:35 PM when police were called to the 4300 block of Ridgecrest Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Cuellar outside with multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries hours later.
Shortly after the homicide, around 4:35 PM, police were alerted to an armed carjacking on Fisher Road. Officers spotted the carjacked vehicle along with a second one on St. Barnabas Road. A pursuit ensued, ending with one of the carjacked vehicles crashing at the intersection of St. Barnabas Road and Wheeler Road. The driver, a 16-year-old, was arrested and a loaded gun was found.
The chase continued for the second vehicle, which eventually crashed in Washington, DC. The two occupants attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended. Another firearm was recovered from the vehicle.
Investigations linked Boyd and the two juveniles to both the murder of Alvarenga Cuellar and the subsequent carjackings. It is believed that the suspects shot the victim during a robbery attempt, and it appears that the victim and the suspects did not know each other.
Boyd and the juveniles face charges of first and second-degree murder, carjacking, among other offenses. Currently, one juvenile is being held without bond in the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections, while Boyd and the other juvenile await extradition to Prince George’s County from Washington, DC.
