NEW YORK, NY – A heat advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 8 p.m. EDT Thursday for several counties in New York City, including Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northern Nassau, Northern Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Southern Nassau, and Southern Queens.
Heat index values are expected to range from 95 to 100 degrees.
Hot temperatures and high humidity levels may lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety during this period. New York City residents can call 311 to locate cooling centers and obtain ‘Beat the Heat’ safety tips.
A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to create a heat index of 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time. Seniors and individuals with chronic health issues or mental health conditions are particularly at risk. Homes without air conditioning can be significantly hotter than outdoor temperatures.
Residents are encouraged to use air conditioning to stay cool at home or visit places with air conditioning. Those without home air conditioning should seek out cool spaces daily while the heat persists and for a few days afterward if their homes remain hot. Checking on vulnerable friends, family members, and neighbors is also recommended.
For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat stroke should be moved to a cool and shaded location immediately, and emergency services should be contacted by calling 911.
