An elderly man lost his life in a tragic collision between a pickup truck and a train in Escondido on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities have identified the victim as 86-year-old Walter Robbins from San Marcos.
The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when a Toyota pickup truck, traveling on West Mission Road, made a right turn onto Enterprise Street. Reports indicate the vehicle bypassed a lowered crossing gate and came to a stop on the train tracks.
Moments later, an eastbound North County Transit District (NCTD) SPRINTER train struck the truck. Emergency responders, including law enforcement and paramedics, arrived at the scene quickly. Robbins was pronounced dead at 1:21 p.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
As a result of the accident, the eastbound 2:03 p.m. SPRINTER from the Oceanside Transit Center was canceled, and train services experienced delays of up to an hour in both directions. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the fatal crash.
