Mount Clemens, MI – The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has released an official update following the discovery of a body in the Clinton River on Thursday afternoon. Authorities have now confirmed the deceased as Gregory Leino, a 59-year-old resident of Eastpointe, Michigan.
Deputies were dispatched to the scene on May 29, 2025, after a 911 call reported a body floating in the river near downtown Mount Clemens, a city located along the Clinton River in southeastern Michigan. Emergency responders arrived quickly and recovered the body from the water with the assistance of the Macomb County Marine Division.
Following recovery efforts, the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Leino’s cause of death was accidental drowning. Authorities emphasized that no signs of foul play were discovered during the investigation or autopsy.
“Based on our investigation and the findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office, this appears to be a tragic accident,” the MCSO stated in a press release issued Friday. “At this time, we do not suspect any criminal activity.”
The Sheriff’s Office has not yet disclosed the circumstances that may have led to Leino’s presence in the river. It is currently unclear whether he had entered the water voluntarily or fell in by accident. Investigators are working with Leino’s family and reviewing local surveillance footage to piece together his last known movements prior to the incident.
Leino’s death marks another sobering reminder of the dangers of open waterways, even in otherwise calm and shallow areas like those in Mount Clemens. The Clinton River, which winds through several Macomb County communities before emptying into Lake St. Clair, is popular for walking, kayaking, and fishing—but like any natural waterway, it presents risks, especially to individuals who may be alone or dealing with medical or mental health issues.
The MCSO extended condolences to Leino’s family and friends, asking the public for privacy and compassion as they grieve this unexpected loss.
“Mr. Leino’s loved ones are going through a very difficult time, and we encourage everyone to respect their privacy,” the agency said.
The Sheriff’s Office also reminded residents to exercise caution near rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water, especially as the region heads into the warmer months. Those with elderly relatives or loved ones facing medical challenges are encouraged to keep close communication and check-ins, particularly if they spend time outdoors or near public waterways.
