The city of Boston is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of EMT Lyanna Tran, a dedicated emergency medical technician whose commitment to saving lives and serving the community left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Boston EMS officially announced the passing of Tran, badge number 1433, describing her as “the very soul of what it means to serve,” and a colleague and friend who will be deeply missed.

Lyanna Tran’s journey began in the Boston EMS Cadet program, which grooms future first responders by offering hands-on experience and mentorship. From the beginning, Tran stood out for her maturity, empathy, and leadership qualities, quickly earning respect from instructors and peers alike. After graduating from the Boston EMS Recruit Academy, she embraced the values of teamwork, resilience, and ethical responsibility—qualities that defined her career.

Her ability to remain calm under pressure and provide comfort to patients during emergencies was often cited by colleagues. Whether responding to routine calls or life-threatening crises, Tran brought professionalism paired with genuine compassion. Fellow EMTs recall how she instinctively knew how to meet people where they were emotionally, offering not only medical aid but heartfelt reassurance.

Tran’s dedication extended beyond her daily duties; she was passionate about community outreach and education. She volunteered for CPR training programs, opioid overdose prevention initiatives, and emergency preparedness campaigns. For her, being an EMT was more than a job—it was a calling rooted in service and humanity.

The sudden nature of her passing has left the Boston EMS community devastated. Grief counselors have been made available to support fellow responders, and extensive support networks are being provided to friends, family, and coworkers. While details of her death remain private at her family’s request, the emotional impact is palpable throughout the department and the city.

Boston EMS Chief Jim Hooley expressed profound sorrow: “Lyanna was part of our family. Her kindness, energy, and dedication were unmatched. We extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones and promise her legacy will live on.”

A memorial service honoring EMT Tran will be held in the coming weeks, drawing first responders from across Massachusetts, city officials, and community members who witnessed her devotion firsthand. Plans are also underway to establish a scholarship in her name to support aspiring EMTs from underserved communities—reflecting her own journey and commitment to opening doors for others.

Tributes poured in from across social media and EMS ranks. One fellow EMT recalled a snowy night shift when Tran brought hot soup to colleagues, exemplifying her thoughtfulness. Others shared stories of her warmth and leadership at community CPR events, where children looked up to her not just as a rescuer but as a role model.

Lyanna Tran’s story is one of quiet heroism—running toward danger to help, offering comfort in crisis, and embodying the true spirit of public service. Although her time was cut tragically short, her influence remains strong in the hearts of those she touched.

At Boston EMS headquarters, her badge number 1433 will be retired, a symbol of the respect and gratitude felt by all. Her locker, draped in flowers and notes, stands as a poignant reminder of a life dedicated to care.

As Boston EMS continues its mission, it does so with the memory of Lyanna Tran inspiring every call and every patient interaction. Her watch may have ended, but her service and spirit live on.

Rest in peace, EMT Lyanna Tran. Your legacy of compassion, courage, and service will never be forgotten.
