SOUTH HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP, PA—Pennsylvania State Police, in collaboration with the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office, have charged 30-year-old Zachary Hixson with aggravated cruelty to animals and neglect.
The charges stem from allegations of severe abuse inflicted on a 10-year-old dog named Snickers, rendering the animal unable to walk.
Troopers responded to a call from the dog’s owner, who reported Snickers’ severe injuries and declining health since Hixson moved into the South Huntingdon Township residence. Upon arrival, troopers found Snickers lying on a cushion, unable to walk.
The investigation revealed disturbing cell phone videos in Hixson’s possession showing him abusing the dog in various ways.
The footage depicted Hixson punching Snickers in the head, choking, shaking, beating with a water jug, holding a lit cigarette to the dog’s eye, and dropping the dog after holding it by the tail.
Hixson was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and neglect. While in custody, Hixson was reportedly combative and spat in the direction of the troopers. He was arraigned and is being held in jail on $50,000 bail.
