Stan Atkinson Death and Obituary – Stan Atkinson, a beloved and pioneering figure in Sacramento’s news landscape, passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy that spanned nearly four decades in local television journalism. His death was confirmed by his family on May 26, 2025. Atkinson’s career, marked by remarkable dedication, courage, and a commitment to truth, made him a household name in the Sacramento area.

Atkinson’s journey in the media world began with an unexpected twist. Originally aspiring to build a career in radio, his path took a sharp turn when he was called to work in television instead. “They said, ‘You’re going back to work in the TV station.’ I said, ‘I can’t do that, I don’t have a coat and tie,’” Atkinson recalled in a 2024 interview on Primetime Sacramento. It was a humorous yet humble reflection of his early days, where his adaptability and willingness to embrace new opportunities quickly set the foundation for his future success.

Atkinson began his television career at KCRA, where he gained attention for his sharp reporting and engaging presence. Later, he moved to KOVR, continuing to earn the respect of his peers and the trust of viewers. Over the course of his career, Atkinson became synonymous with integrity in journalism, known for his accurate, fair, and compassionate reporting. His reputation for covering significant and challenging events was solidified through his extensive war reporting. He bravely covered conflicts in Cambodia, Afghanistan, and Serbia, facing life-threatening situations along the way. One of the most harrowing moments of his career occurred when a sniper’s bullet narrowly missed him. “All of a sudden, I hear his gunfire, and all of a sudden, I feel a 30-caliber part the hair on the back of my neck,” he recounted. “It didn’t hit me, but it came so close.”

Atkinson’s work extended beyond international stories. One of his early impactful stories exposed appalling conditions at a hospital in Auburn, which catalyzed important changes in local healthcare. Throughout his tenure, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the community for his professionalism, humility, and unwavering dedication to truth.

Though Atkinson retired from television in 1999, his connection to the Sacramento area remained strong. Describing the city as “special,” he found it easy to make the region his home for so many years. His curiosity and love for people continued to define his life even after retirement. His son, Mike Atkinson, shared that his father’s curiosity was boundless, and he was always eager to engage with others, whether learning about their hobbies or connecting with staff at Mercy McMahan Terrace, where he lived in his later years.

As a family man, Atkinson was the proud grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 18. His family, particularly his son Mike, who considered him his best friend, was central to his life. Mike described his father as a man who had a deep respect for truth and for the viewers who trusted him to deliver it. “He loved truth,” Mike said, “and I think this comes back to how much he respected the viewers because he felt like they needed to know.”

Atkinson’s passing marks the end of an era for Sacramento journalism. His contributions to local news are immeasurable, and he will be remembered as a steadfast figure who set the standard for integrity and dedication in the profession. A private memorial service, for family only, is planned to honor his life and legacy.

Stan Atkinson’s death leaves a profound void in the Sacramento community, but his influence will continue to resonate for generations to come.
