Putin Shows No Signs of Ending War, Zelenskyy Warns Amid Escalating Drone Attacks

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating as Ukrainian intelligence and open-source data reveal that Russian President Vladimir Putin has no intention of ending the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in his daily evening address on Monday, May 13, 2025. Zelenskyy underscored that there is “currently no indication that they are seriously considering peace or diplomacy.” Instead, he emphasized, evidence points to Moscow preparing for new offensive operations.

Zelenskyy’s remarks come in the wake of an intense overnight exchange of long-range drone attacks between the two nations. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a massive barrage of 364 “air attack vehicles” comprising nine cruise missiles and 355 attack drones. In a remarkable defensive effort, Ukraine intercepted or neutralized all nine missiles and 288 drones, although impacts and debris were reported across several Ukrainian regions.

Simultaneously, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have shot down 128 Ukrainian drones over 12 regions during the same period. This ongoing drone warfare has become a grim hallmark of the prolonged conflict, now stretching beyond three years, with neither side showing signs of yielding to ceasefire or peace negotiations.

The scale and frequency of cross-border strikes have intensified in recent months, culminating in what Ukrainian officials described as Russia’s largest aerial assault of the war just days prior. This assault, involving over 367 drones and missiles, resulted in at least 18 civilian casualties, adding to the devastating human toll.

The brutal nature of these attacks sparked public rebukes from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who criticized both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump expressed dismay at Putin’s relentless attacks on civilian targets, stating, “He’s killing a lot of people,” and questioned the reasons behind Putin’s conduct despite their previous rapport. Trump also critiqued Zelenskyy’s rhetoric, suggesting it may not be benefiting Ukraine’s cause.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed gratitude to the Americans and President Trump for their role in facilitating the ongoing negotiation process, calling it “a very important achievement.” However, Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials remain skeptical of Moscow’s overtures for peace, citing the continued massed strikes as proof of insincerity.

Zelenskyy remarked that Russia is “counting on a prolonged war,” calling Moscow’s actions “a blatant disregard for all those around the world who seek peace and are trying to make diplomacy work.” This statement underscores Ukraine’s position that Russia’s military actions contradict its public diplomatic gestures, complicating international efforts to broker peace.

The continuing drone warfare and missile strikes represent not only a military confrontation but also a psychological battle with devastating consequences for civilians living under constant threat. The ongoing violence and destruction have strained the resilience of the Ukrainian people, while international observers and allies watch closely for signs of progress toward ending the conflict.

As intelligence reports continue to reveal Russia’s preparations for new offensives, Ukraine braces for further challenges ahead. The international community’s push for diplomacy faces significant hurdles as the realities on the ground contradict hopeful rhetoric. The tragic cycle of violence persists, with profound human costs and geopolitical ramifications.

In this precarious situation, Zelenskyy’s appeals highlight the urgent need for genuine commitment to peace from all parties. While diplomatic efforts continue behind closed doors, the reality of sustained hostilities underscores the fragility of the situation and the high stakes involved.

The world remains hopeful that sustained pressure, combined with strategic diplomacy, can eventually lead to a resolution. Until then, Ukraine faces a daunting struggle to defend its sovereignty and protect its people against relentless aggression, while global leaders grapple with the complexities of a conflict that has reshaped international relations and security dynamics.

The conflict in Ukraine remains a critical focal point for global peace efforts, and the latest developments serve as a sobering reminder of the challenges ahead. As both sides prepare for what may come, the hope for peace endures among those who continue to work tirelessly toward a diplomatic solution that ends the bloodshed and restores stability to the region.
