(WGHP) — The U.S. Department of Government Efficiency has claimed millions in savings from terminating federal office leases in North Carolina alone, according to data provided on the department’s website.
DOGE, as the department is called, was created by President Donald Trump with input from billionaire Elon Musk, though Musk does not technically work for DOGE, in order to cut government spending.
It has been busy at work slashing jobs and funding across a huge swath of the federal government, impacting everyone from NOAA weather researchers to local Veterans Affairs offices. It touts billions of dollars in savings from these cuts.
Available data indicate that the termination of leases held by the federal government across the nation are part of the calculated savings, including 20 buildings that were held here in North Carolina.

Ultimately, DOGE touts that terminated leases in North Carolina will save the government $3,414,203 dollars, with locations here in the Triad totaling $978,749.
The largest facility in North Carolina to be impacted is the Nature Resources Conservation Commission in Greensboro, a 30,123-square-foot facility, followed in a distant second by the IRS office in Wilmington.
Experts and critics have pointed out that the department’s claims that DOGE has saved the government $65 billion to date is murky and hard to verify, according to reporting from NPR. DOGE has been accused of inflating or misrepresenting the savings by including money no longer being spent on contracts that have already been completed or terminated.
The full nationwide list of leases reportedly terminated by DOGE can be seen below:
It is unclear if any of the lease terminations represented in DOGE’s “wall of receipts” also represent layoffs at those locations.
