QUEENS, NY — Harold Vega, 46, has been indicted on multiple charges after a high-speed chase in Astoria on July 3 led to the severe injury of an e-bike rider. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the charges following Vega’s arraignment on a 13-count grand jury indictment. The charges include first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and other related offenses.
Vega, a Bronx resident, allegedly engaged in reckless driving behaviors that endangered many during the pursuit. According to the District Attorney, Vega ran through 26 red lights and 14 stop signs, drove against traffic, and on sidewalks, ultimately striking e-biker Arturo Aguirre Matias. The victim, a husband and father, sustained severe head trauma and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The chase began after an officer attempted to stop Vega, whose vehicle had a license plate mismatch. Vega initially halted but then fled, leading police on an 11-minute chase through residential and commercial areas. The chase ended when Vega crashed into a parked car, then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended with the help of bystanders.
At the time of his arrest, Vega was found in possession of cocaine and was driving with a suspended license on an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. Vega faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top count. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 4.
