The tight-knit community of Sumter County, South Carolina, is in mourning after the tragic and violent death of 38-year-old Robert Dustin Burleson, a lifelong resident who was well-known for his work in construction and his involvement in local charity projects. Burleson’s sudden death, following a shooting at his home on May 7, 2025, has left the community grappling with sorrow and confusion. His loss, and the events surrounding it, have sparked an investigation and led to the arrest of 44-year-old Michael William Dow, a Sumter County resident who has been charged with multiple felony offenses, including murder.

The chain of events leading to Burleson’s tragic death began in the early hours of the morning on May 7. At approximately 3:42 a.m., a 911 call was placed reporting gunfire at a residence on the 2000 block of Old Camden Highway in Sumter County. Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene and found the lifeless body of Robert Dustin Burleson in the entryway of his home. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and emergency medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Despite the tragic nature of the crime, there were no immediate signs of forced entry into the house, but investigators soon discovered evidence of a violent struggle. The rear door of the house had been smashed in, and multiple rooms appeared to have been ransacked, though there were no valuable items reported as missing.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities began to piece together the timeline of events. Neighbors reported hearing an argument followed by several loud gunshots in the early morning hours. Surveillance footage from nearby properties showed a dark-colored pickup truck leaving the area at high speed around the time of the shooting. Through traffic camera identification and subsequent forensic analysis, law enforcement was able to link the vehicle to Michael William Dow, who had lived in the area for several years. Based on this evidence and witness accounts, a search warrant was obtained for Dow’s residence.

By 1:30 p.m. on May 7, 2025, armed with probable cause, officers from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team (SERT), along with narcotics detectives, descended on Dow’s home on Old Field Road. Dow was arrested without incident and taken into custody. His arrest marked a significant development in the case, but it also raised many questions about the circumstances leading to the violent act. Dow has been formally charged with multiple offenses, including murder, first-degree burglary, trafficking in cocaine, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

According to the arrest affidavit, detectives uncovered digital messages exchanged between Dow and Burleson in the days leading up to the shooting. These communications suggested that the murder may have been the result of a heated personal dispute, potentially involving financial or narcotics-related disagreements. Further investigation revealed that Dow had been involved in illegal drug trafficking activities, and the search of his home uncovered over 50 grams of cocaine, several unregistered firearms, and more than $27,000 in cash. These findings led authorities to believe that Dow’s criminal activities were a significant factor in the deadly confrontation.

The discovery of this additional evidence has painted a troubling picture of the events leading to Burleson’s death. It has also raised concerns about the level of criminal activity in the rural areas of Sumter County. Dow’s history with the law includes prior arrests for possession of controlled substances, assault, and illegal weapons possession. Though most of these charges had been either dropped or resulted in probation, Dow remained on the radar of law enforcement officials, particularly the Narcotics Unit. This recent development serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illicit drug trade activities and unregulated firearms in small communities, and it has led to increased concern about the safety of local residents.

Robert Dustin Burleson, known affectionately as “Dusty,” was a well-liked and respected member of the Sumter County community. He worked as a licensed general contractor and had recently launched his own business, “Burleson Renovations.” Burleson was also heavily involved in community service, volunteering to teach trade skills to local teenagers and supporting youth mentorship programs. His friends and colleagues remember him as a man who always showed up for others, no matter the time of day. Longtime friend Terrence Wilkes described Burleson as a man who would “show up for a friend at 2 a.m. if they needed help” and said that Burleson was “trying to build something positive” in his life, despite the challenges he faced.

Burleson’s family, including his siblings, parents, and extended relatives, are devastated by his death. They have expressed their shock and grief over the loss of a man who was working hard to build a future for himself and his loved ones. His family is finding some comfort in the support of the community, who have rallied together in the wake of the tragedy. Neighbors have left flowers, candles, and handwritten notes outside Burleson’s home, which is now a crime scene. A candlelight vigil honoring Burleson’s memory has been scheduled for May 9, 2025, at Patriot Park, where friends and family will come together to reflect on his life and offer their condolences.

In addition to the arrest of Michael William Dow, the investigation is ongoing. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is working to uncover any additional details about the circumstances leading to the murder and whether Dow’s criminal activities had any connections to broader criminal networks operating in the region. Sheriff Anthony Dennis, in a press briefing, emphasized that this was a senseless and deliberate act of violence that had shaken the community to its core. He noted that Dow’s arrest was the result of the diligent efforts of the law enforcement team, and he expressed his hope that justice would be served for Burleson and his family.

The tragic death of Robert Dustin Burleson has reignited conversations about the prevalence of drug trafficking and firearm violence in rural communities. While Sumter County has not historically been known for high crime rates, recent arrests related to narcotics and weapons have raised concerns about the infiltration of criminal networks into smaller towns. Sheriff Dennis and local officials have pledged to work with federal agencies, including the DEA and ATF, to combat the flow of illegal drugs and firearms into the area. Sheriff Dennis underscored the importance of vigilance, stating, “This is not just an urban problem. Criminal networks are infiltrating every corner of the state, and we must remain vigilant.”

As the legal proceedings continue, the family of Robert Dustin Burleson is left to grieve a life taken too soon. What began as a normal Wednesday morning in Sumter County has now become a permanent tragedy that will forever shape the memory of the community. While the arrest of Michael William Dow offers some degree of closure, the emotional and psychological toll on the family and the wider community will take much longer to heal.

As the investigation moves forward, law enforcement continues to urge anyone with additional information to come forward. The community remains hopeful that justice will be served and that those responsible for this senseless act of violence will be held accountable. The loss of Robert Dustin Burleson is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of protecting those we love, as well as the need for continued vigilance in the fight against drugs and crime in rural communities.
